Good tool for the job.
First, you need to use the sear pin that is going to be installed in the gun. That is why there is no sear pin included. Second, If you try to hold the fixture and the .020 shim and the stone, you are working too hard. Use a vise and put just a little oil between the fixture and the shim. The hydraulics will hold it down. I got great results the first time I used this jig. If you understand how this works you will too.
easy to use
does just what it says it will do.
Good tool, nice instructions
Just used this tool for a 1911 trigger job. I was able to set the primary sear angle on a RIA .22TCM/9mm 1911 using this tool along with the Brownells 2-stone ceramic file set. One reviewer indicated the set screw in the tool was loose. Mine was not, and was set correctly @ 0.074 (or 0.417 as measured from the end of the tool as Brownells suggests) and the screw seems tight. I had to experiment with how to hold the tool so I could keep pressure on the sear against the set screw with one hand and hold the ceramic stone and shim on the horizontal surface of the tool. Once I figured out the routine, keeping the precise angle was quite easy while stoning the sear nose. Setting the secondary angle was easy as well. Just follow the instructions. Result: 3lbs-15oz trigger pull, no creep, clean break. I found that adjusting the sear spring for fine changes was pretty easy to do, so don't worry if your trigger pull comes in a little too low. Easy to give a little more bend to the sear spring leaves for a heavier pull weight. This is really a great value in another tool from Brownells.
"PRACTICALLY PERFECT" IN EVERY WAY !!!!!
HAVE USED THIS SEAR JIG FOR AT LEAST 25 YEARS & IT HAS NEVER DISAPPOINTED !!! A SEAR PIN IS NOT INCLUDED, BUT....(1) USE THE SEAR PIN FROM YOUR PISTOL (2) USE THE SEAR PIN FROM THE "EXTERNAL HAMMER & SEAR FITTING PIN" KIT (3) SEARCH THROUGH YOUR SMALL PARTS INVENTORY & FIND ONE THAT FITS THE HOLE SNUGLY & DESIGNATE IT FOR THE JIG !!!!!!! THIS ORIGINAL "TOM WILSON" DESIGN WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE HELD IN YOUR HAND. IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE SECURELY CLAMPED IN THE PADDED JAWS OF YOUR BENCH OR MACHINIST VISE !!!!!! .020" SHIM STOCK WON'T BEHAVE ITSELF ??? PLACE A COUPLE OF DROPS OF NON-HARDENING CLEAR SILICONE CAULK OR CLEAR NAIL POLISH ON THE WORKING SIDE OF THE JIG. PLACE THE SHIM STOCK ON TOP, GENTLY CLAMP IN PLACE, & ALLOW TO SIT ABOUT AN HOUR IN A WARM PLACE. MINE HAS NOT MOVED FROM THE JIG IN THE PAST 15 YEARS---DUH !!!! FINALLY, THIS SEAR JIG IS DESIGNED ONLY FOR THE PURPOSE OF STONING THE "SEAR NOSE PRIMARY ANGLE". IT WAS NEVER INTENDED TO STONE THE "SECONDARY NOSE ANGLE" !!!!! THE COMPLAINTS POSTED IN SOME REVIEWS, ARE TOTALLY UNWARRANTED. SIMPLY USE THE JIG AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO WORK !!! IT IS VERY WELL MADE, DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO, & WILL BE AROUND LONG AFTER YOU HAVE PASSED ON---SEMPER FI !!!
Excellent for the price.
For the price this stoning fixture worked very well. The screw will have to be checked and adjusted for each different sear. Sears from different manufacturers will be slightly different. Just mark the sear surface, hone lightly with a fine stone and check the angle. Adjust as needed. I did two sears in a short time and had a noticeable improvement in both. The fixture does not have a pin to mount the sear, but this is irrelevant since the sear pin must be removed from the gun anyway. More illustrations on how to set up and use the fixture would be helpful.
1911 Sear Fixture
My wife gave me this jig as a Christmas present. Thank you Honey! By carefully following the instructions I was able to virtually eliminate the creep in the trigger on my first try. I thought surely I would ruin a few sears in the process due to no experience at all. Using this jig and by following the directions I was able to successfully do a triger job right the first time. The overall feel of the trigger after stoning and polishing is smooth, light and crisp. Study the process, take your time and work patiently and you will be rewarded by excellent results.
Works quite well
I used this great product for a new sear install on my 1911 and it seemed to work great and I love the result. Be aware though that this doesn't come with a sear pin, I think it should, so you'll need to order one, have a spare on-hand, or use the one out of your pistol.
Just like every tool from Brownells!
I bought this tool while waiting on a more expensive jig. I thought I would give it a try. Wow, was I surprised. I followed the directions in the package and it allowed me to cut my sear to the exact angles I needed. While I'm waiting on the back ordered tool, this new one maybe my primary sear jig.
Nice setup
This is my first jig for doing sear honing. Nice solid setup that gets me glass breaking trigger pulls. Wish the jig was relieved for easier thumb placement. That would get the 5th star.
Good tool for the price but check ...
This is a good tool for the price, and it is not difficult to use once you figure out how the sear is installed in the tool. You will need to check the tool specs using a sear of an known specification. I checked the tool against a new Cylinder & Slide sear and found that I will need to use a 0.040 shim rather than the 0.020 shim to keep from stoning sears below the minimum specification.
