While some appreciate the fit and appearance, many find issues with the dark stain obscuring the wood grain and defects in checkering. A portion of users, however, note satisfactory aesthetics for a budget option.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Product Quality
72%
A significant number of reviewers express dissatisfaction with the overall quality of the walnut grips, often questioning the authenticity of the wood used and noting defects in checkering. Many mention that the grips do not meet expectations set by the Herrett and Brownells brands, leading to disappointment in product reliability.
Appearance and Finish
60%
Reviews frequently mention concerns related to the finish of the grips, particularly the overly dark stain that hides the wood grain. While some appreciate the overall look, many others wish for a lighter or unstained option that shows natural wood characteristics. This theme highlights the tension between aesthetic appeal and product expectations.

Several reviews highlight specific defects found in the grips, such as poorly done checkering and dents. The consistency of these defects raises concerns among users, leading them to question the manufacturing processes. This theme underscores user expectations around quality control.
Fit and Compatibility

Some customers have had a positive experience with the fit of the grips on their 1911 models, noting that they fit well and seem to serve their purpose. This aspect is appreciated, especially when consumers are looking to enhance the vintage appearance of their firearms.
Value for Money
35%
While some reviewers call attention to the overall quality issues, others view the grips as good value for the price, especially as a less expensive option for replacing older grips. This perception of value varies based on individual expectations regarding quality versus cost.

Looks Like the Originals
I have a Colt reproduction 1911 of the WW1 1918 produced gun. The grips that came with the gun are the modern Colt double diamond grip and look ok but don't really make the gun look authentic. The Herrett grips make the gun look exactly like the photos of original 1918 era WW1 1911 pistols. Very well made and fit perfectly. I highly recommend them.

High Quality, Perfect Look, Fit and Feel
Was looking to give an early Parkerized Colt Model 1991A1 a more 'vintage' Service Pistol appearance. The factory grips (checkered black rubber w/Colt logo in center) were excellent but just didn't have the look I wanted. I have it now. Also bought the 100-006-692WB Hayes Brown Nylon grips of the WWII (no 'Diamond') style. Exceptionally pleased with both sets. The Herretts are crisply checkered and nicely stained but a bit pricey compared to the very low cost of the Hayes set. Either way you go, I can highly recommend both. The 1991A1 looks (and feels) exceptionally good with either.

work of art
you just cannot beat the price for such a set of grips that is immaculately made - it is definitely a herretts special order product

Very nice set of grips for vintage 1911
The grips arrived in a bubble pack envelope and were undamaged. They bolted right up to my 1918 Colt built 1911. As noted by other reviewers the stain is very dark and you will not see much if any wood grain. If they offered an unstained version I would buy that and do an oil treatment instead. The checkering is very nice on my set. Complaints of dented checkering may be a result of not having shipped in a box as opposed to an envelope. All said, I am happy with them as they replace a set of GI plastic slabs.

They work
They fit well and look good. Sharp checkering. The wood seems to be of poor quality. Only time will tell how long they will last. Needed them to replace broken grip. Still deciding on a permanent replacement.

Herretts ???
I probably will return. poor quality, package/bag not marked with any Herretts logo, many checkering overruns , finish looks like dark brown paint. :(

Not the greatest
Too dark, but the checkering is good. I wanted a set that would replace my original grips that are a little beat up. Wish they were just a little lighter. You can hardly tell that they are even made of wood. Poor quality wood. Won't send them back but will keep on looking for a set that reproduces my original 1911 grips.

Authentic look
They have the right look, but there are defects that detract from the grips. Poorly checkered is some spots, with a dent in one of the diamonds. Would not consider buying again, unless they were cheaper and I needed a beater pair to age. You should do better Herrett.

Color is Walnut wood is not!
Unmarked package, one has no idea if it came from Herrett's. There is no way this is walnut . Note description says 1911 replica walnut grips. Meaning the stain is a replica walnut color. These are not walnut wood. These are probably poplar stained walnut. I would love to strip this finish and see white wood underneath. Misleading description. Returning for sure and pretty disappointed in Brownells. In the Q&A Brownells says they are walnut.....really? prove it. Why would you paint/stain walnut so opaque. Just junk.

Not Impressed
I needed a set of grips for a customer who wanted a WW I look on his early commercial Colt 1911's. I didn't install these as they did not live up to Brownell's and Herrett's typical quality. I don't know what the wood is but I doubt it is walnut. The checkering is poorly done and incomplete, especially near the diamonds. The "Stain" is more typical of a paint versus stain and muddies the look. Basically NOT EVEN CLOSE to WW I grips.
