Well made, but...

My best friend has one of the original Colt scopes from the early 80s, and I always thought it was very cool, so when Brownells brought these back I just had to get one. They are very well made, solid, and gives any carry handle AR a neat retro look. The problem is, this is not a very easy or comfortable scope to use. This is because the eye relief is so close that you literally have to have your nose almost touching the carry handle to get a good sight picture. I have two carry handle ARs, one A2 style, and one CAR style. On the A2, with it's long buttstock, you have to slide your cheek so far up the stock that it turns into a very unnatural shooting position. With the CAR, you have to slide the stock in 1-2 positions to get a clear sight picture, which is fine except now your trigger hand/arm is so close to the body that it becomes an awkward position. So, this has become a cool retro ornament - maybe, if I ever build a rifle just for show, I can put the scope on that, as it is very nice to look at.

With Exceptions

I wanted to use this scope with an A2 stock, but the eye relief was not attainable, the tunnel effect as it were. Changed over to a collapsible stock pushed all the way forward and that did the trick. The next issue is the check weld, The scop sits higher than the open sights and it is workable but need a cheek piece riser to correctly address this issue. The windage and elevation do not have "click" feedback. A head of a bullet case is needed to make adjustments. Although the windage dial can be move with fingertips a case head works better. No scope caps or covers provided. Other than those items, the unit is made well, looks good and the optics are clear and bright. Cross hairs center will cover a 1" circle at 100 yards. Another choice is to go with a 1-4x scope with a 1-piece scope mount or a 3/4 riser and medium rings for about the same price. No check weld problem with that combo. If the "Retro" look is what is desired, then go for it. I have not used the bullet drop compensator and can't comment on its effect on accuracy beyond 100 yards.

Vertical adjustment ?

Took off brand scope of same type off and installed Colt scope. Using laser boresighter, horizontal adjustment not necessary. Vertical adjustment would not move far enough. Will continue to see how it shoots on paper.

Short Eye Relief

Eye relief is shorter than a 4x acog. Not good for retro carbine w/2 position stock. I’m 6’0’ and ran out of shoulder pocket even with a 100% bladed stance. I bet it IS true to the original, it like adding 1/7 twist to a retro barrel, you’d think if it were optically possible, Hakko would increase the eye relief a bit to make it more shootable. The glass IS really clear, though.

Looks good, adjustment knobs didn't click

External appearance is excellent and the mount system secured to the carry handle of my A2 clone securely. However, when it came time to zero it, the adjustment knobs didn't click, which made it take a little longer to zero. The adjustment knobs not clicking makes me worried about the zero wondering, but the knobs had good tension on them, so we'll see.

I expected better

I've been wanting this scope for a long time and am glad that I procrastinated because now it has the Colt logo. It looks and feels high quality but unfortunately I think I may have gotten a lemon. The problem is the eye box which is blurry in most areas except for the lower right. If I put my eye directly behind the scope so that the field of view is equal in all directions then the view through the scope is blurry past 10 yards. I've spent hours adjusting it to try to find if there was some sweet spot but there isn't. The only place I can put my eye to get a clear picture is in the extreme lower right. I have many, many, many other scopes - both cheap and expensive - so I'm not a novice with these things. When it's not blurry the glass is very clear and I can tell that it would be great if not for this one problem. I'll probably play with it a bit more but I may have to return it for a new one.
