OXPHO-BLUE®

OXPHO-BLUE® Reviews & Ratings

Originally developed for the occasional bluer who is not equipped to completely polish a gun prior to bluing, Oxpho Blue - because of its ease of application and remarkably superior results - has become a favorite of the professional gunsmith as well. With Oxpho-Blue, all you need do in most cases, is dampen a piece of cotton flannel and give the area a good rubbing. The chemical goes through the oil on the gun, removes thin rust and blues the steel underneath. No after-rust. For looks, the final finish was not intended to approach the beauty of the well-polished, hot-blued gun. It has developed, however, that in the hands of a careful craftsman, not only is the Oxpho-Blue finish beautiful, but it is also more durable and weather resistant than any other known chemical finish. Oxpho-Blue has other outstanding features worthy of note:

  1. Absolutely no after-rust.
  2. Phosphate-like surface forms under the blue.
  3. Rust removing qualities of the solution, making it unnecessary to remove mild rust in the usual manner.
  4. "Wetting" characteristics of the solution, giving it the ability to penetrate oil, dirt, etc., on the surface of the gun; blue the metal underneath; remove rust and dirt; leave the gun blued and ready for oiling.
  5. Beauty and high durability of the finish: vigorous rubbing with No. 0 steel wool is one of our favorite application methods - the more rubbing, the more brilliant it comes and, since abrasion is part of the process, normal contact from gun cases, brush and clothing won't wear your bluing. (Note: It is possible to get a surface so dense with Oxpho-Blue that water will puddle on it!)
  6. For Neighbor Kid and Mr. Average Sportsman, a beat-up gun can be made to look quite presentable by following this recent application technique; dampen a shoe shine cloth with Oxpho-Blue and blue the gun with a shoe shine motion - without taking too much trouble to remove old dirt, grease, rust, etc. This particular gimmick actually obsoletes all other kinds of bluing for retail sale, for any youngster can make his old man's gun look quite presentable. For gun club members, neighborhood shooters, etc., one bottle takes care of the lot. (The rub-on features works wonders on tools and instruments which have been blackened and show bright along the edges: just dampen a cloth with Oxpho-Blue, rub the bright areas briskly and they are as black as before, but tougher.)

SPECS: 4 fl. oz. (118ml), or 32 fl. oz.

Best cold blue product there is!
Awesome products if you follow directions it works like a charm just use the blue by itself. nothing under it is the bare steel works on Polished steel great. and put several coats on the barrel and it came out beautiful. I can't complain about anything the only thing is it's a little tedious and you got to make sure you clean it good before you start the blue I can clean it with a acetone works best !

Great Product
I buy old reloaders, Star, Texan.....they are usually rusty and worn. I polish and blast the parts and reblue with this stuff, it works great. I've tried all different types of cold blues and this stuff is the best I've ever used!!

Restoration or Repair - Excellent Bluing
Recently restored my dad's WInchester Model 94. Sadly it was not properly stored when I found it. Lots of exterior rust. In order to restore I talk to several gunsmiths and all were using various cold bluing systems due to the ease of use. This product did a wonderful job restoring the rifle, helping to preserve it for the future.

Best cold blueing I've used
Used it several times to touch up worn blueing worked well for that. Just used it to blue the complete frame of my 1911 and this stuff did a great job. Very easy to use made a very nice looking even finish. I really can't think of any cons against it. I have used other cold blues and have never gotten as good of a finish as I did with Oxpho-blue this looks better than some manufacturer finishes, looks a lot better than the finish that was originally on my 1911 won't say what brand my 1911 is except that this one is not a Colt. Would very highly recommend it to anyone.

Great finish
Purchased this to restore a rusty 870. Prep is the key. Remove as much of the existing bluing as possible. Mine was bare metal. I applied four coats and rubbed with #0000 steel wool between coats to buff/blend the color then cleaned with alcohol prior to next coat of Oxpho-blue. Incredible results. I only used about 4 oz for one receiver and two barrels.

New Favorite Cold Blue
Very impressed with the product; I've used a few other cold-blues in my business, and this is by far the most effective, easy-to-use, and delivers the best results. Thanks!

Better than Birchwood Casey
I bought this product to reblue an old Stevens 87A .22 rifle and so far it has worked great. Easy to use, you don't necessarily have to go down to bare metal for this to work, a light polishing with some 1000 or 1500 grit paper with a little oil works fine to clean up the metal, but I recommend you get any oil off of the metal before you apply. It also helps to warm the metal a little bit. I used a hair dryer for that. Al in all, this is a great product for both professional and do-it-yourselfer alike.

Great Stuff!
This stuff works great for touch ups, like when you widen the notch on a single action revolver and have to ball mill the top strap. Works great for complete blues on revolvers too. With a good prep down to bare metal and using steel wool to apply, Oxpho is a snap and looks great!

Outstanding product
Oxpho-Blue is an outstanding product that is easy to use and produces a beautiful black finish with just a hint of blue tint. I put 8-10 coats on the components of an old Colt revolver. The finish is as dark as the 60 year-old factory blue. Metal prep is extremely important. I polished the steel prior to bluing. This produced a gorgeous, dark gloss finish.

The Best!
This stuff is great! PROPERLY APPLIED it will result in a beautiful long wearing blue black finish. I have used it with exellent results on both highly polished and blasted parts. My favorite hunting rifle was completely finished with Oxpho-Blue more than a decade ago. It has been used hard every season and the only wear is on the bolt knob, and another rifle I have that is factory blued has the same amount of wear on the bolt knob. Am I saying it is as good as hot blueing? Probably not, but if you are not set up to hot blue and dont want to pay well over 100 bucks to get it done, then this is what you need!
