AR-15/M16 COLT™ 4X RETRO CARRY HANDLE SCOPE

AR-15/M16 COLT™ 4X RETRO CARRY HANDLE SCOPE Reviews & Ratings

Colt AR-15/M16 Colt™ 4X Retro Carry Handle Scope - Classic Design, Modern Optics

A Vintage Tribute That Performs Like New

The Colt AR-15/M16 Colt™ 4X Retro Carry Handle Scope is a faithful revival of the 1970s-era Colt carry-handle optics, crafted by the same Japanese manufacturer who made the originals. Brownells worked with them to recreate everything down to the iconic yellow inspection sticker-but under that retro exterior lies a thoroughly modern optical platform. Fully multi-coated lenses are waterproof and fog-proof, ensuring tough, reliable performance in all environments.

Direct-Mount Simplicity

This scope attaches directly to any standard AR-15/M16 carry handle without tools. Its integral mount makes installation fast and secure, preserving the classic silhouette while upgrading functionality.

Optics Tuned for the AR Platform

For precision out to distance, the scope features a simple duplex reticle with a click-adjustable elevation turret calibrated in BDC (ballistic drop compensation) increments tailored to .223/5.56 mm rounds (55–62 gr bullets). The turret settings align with common engagement ranges-from around 200 up to 500 yards-giving shooters reliable holdover without guesswork.

Sized for Classic Builds, Built Tough

With a 35 mm tube and compact dimensions-roughly 6.1″ long, 3.15″ tall, and 1.85″ wide-the Colt Retro 4X Scope retains that iconic form factor. It weighs approximately 12.7–13.3 oz and sports a matte black finish that complements vintage ARs. Its aluminum construction balances light weight with rugged strength.

Modern Clarity, Vintage Style

Shooters across forums praise this optic’s clear glass and authentic appearance. One user described their experience at the range as “flawless” in function, while others admire how it scratches onto the carry handle-just like the old-school originals-reinforcing the nostalgic aesthetic.

Vertical adjustment ?
Took off brand scope of same type off and installed Colt scope. Using laser boresighter, horizontal adjustment not necessary. Vertical adjustment would not move far enough. Will continue to see how it shoots on paper.
3
Short Eye Relief
Eye relief is shorter than a 4x acog. Not good for retro carbine w/2 position stock. I’m 6’0’ and ran out of shoulder pocket even with a 100% bladed stance. I bet it IS true to the original, it like adding 1/7 twist to a retro barrel, you’d think if it were optically possible, Hakko would increase the eye relief a bit to make it more shootable. The glass IS really clear, though.

Looks good, adjustment knobs didn't click
External appearance is excellent and the mount system secured to the carry handle of my A2 clone securely. However, when it came time to zero it, the adjustment knobs didn't click, which made it take a little longer to zero. The adjustment knobs not clicking makes me worried about the zero wondering, but the knobs had good tension on them, so we'll see.

I expected better
I've been wanting this scope for a long time and am glad that I procrastinated because now it has the Colt logo. It looks and feels high quality but unfortunately I think I may have gotten a lemon. The problem is the eye box which is blurry in most areas except for the lower right. If I put my eye directly behind the scope so that the field of view is equal in all directions then the view through the scope is blurry past 10 yards. I've spent hours adjusting it to try to find if there was some sweet spot but there isn't. The only place I can put my eye to get a clear picture is in the extreme lower right. I have many, many, many other scopes - both cheap and expensive - so I'm not a novice with these things. When it's not blurry the glass is very clear and I can tell that it would be great if not for this one problem. I'll probably play with it a bit more but I may have to return it for a new one.
Would you recommend this? Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Replica AR15 carry handle scope
The only reason I give a 2 is because it looks period correct. Does not hold a zero at all. The one I have is actually the previous one offered, hopefully the current model is better quality.
2
Maximum cool factor when mounted to carry handle....
...RIDICULOUSLY useless because of eye relief. I had to move my buttstock all the way forward on my XM177E1 to get a good sight picture. There is no way to change the eye relief. If it weren't for this one feature I would be as pleased as I could be.
2
Disappointed
I purchased one of these scopes several years ago from Brownells. The optics are very clear. Unfortunately, the adjustments are sticky. One can adjust the verticle & horizontal and nothing happens. Adjust again, and the movement is more that one would anticipate. It was difficult to get bullets to strike where one wanted.

Looks good, but
Unfortunately, the crosshairs are not properly aligned with the tube. When the tube is aligned with the rifle the crosshairs are not vertical.

Are these scopes 2nds?
The horizontal and vertical reticle’s are curved!

Disappointing
Got mine in the mail yesterday. Mounted it and noticed the crosshairs were canted. I thought it my be the machining on my carry handle. Mounted it another carry handle, again canted to the right. mounted it to a block this morning with a level, and leveled out the top of the elevation turret. Sure enough, the crosshairs are canted to the right (clockwise).
