Just what I was looking for
Yes, with the new logo and marking, I pulled the other Retro Scope on my Colt XM-177 E1 and popped this onto the carry handle, Yes, Awesome!
Now except for full auto, This looks exactly like the off paper CAR I had in Nam. hanging on the wing plates of mu seat.
Great Scope For Carry Handle Colt AR Style Rifles
Exact scope style that was available 50 years ago but with improved optics. Colt Logo on top of housing and 4x20 markings in white. Made by the original manufacturer in Japan. Scope looks and feels like a quality product. The adjustment dial covers are metal not plastic. The range adjustments "click" for different yardages from 100 to 500 yards. The windage and elevation adjustments are graduated but have no detectable clicking sensation. The mounting system is quick release with a spinning lock nut that holds the scope tight to the top of the handle. Scope is very clear and has an objective focus ring that has a locking outer ring to hold the adjustment. The cross hairs are duplex and a little heavier than I like for longer shooting ranges but are manageable. The scope does not come with caps. Looks super cool on my 1973 Colt AR-15. Group in photo was shot at 50 yards with 55 grain bullets.
Not a repro, but the real thing
When the same company makes the same scope it did almost 40 years ago, they’re just resuming production, but with improvements developed over those years. This *is* the ultra-rare Colt-marked 4x20 scope, the same as before. Except for the lack of lens caps, but nobody probably makes them any more, even in Japan. As an aside, the Butler Creek “05 EYE” flip cap fits perfectly. I’m still looking for a 35mm front cap.
I included a picture of the scope, along with the rare “first model” of the 3x scope, so the sight differences in the tube near the eyepiece can be seen. The first scopes had roll-engraved markings filled with white paint, while later ones have the same style of silk-screening for both models. The original lens caps are below the scopes, just as a reference.
Brownells has scored a major victory in getting the original optics company, and Colt, to resume production of this classic.
Nice except...
Just received my retro scope and while construction, clarity and function are good, the eye relief is just horroble. On my fixed stock, semi auto M16a1 clone I have to rearrange eveything to be able to squirm up close to use the scope. I'm assuming a collapsing stock might help some but going from irons to scope is certainly not quick nor easy.
looks pretty cool
eye relieve if pretty far forward, but looks good, zero's just fine. Attaches easy. Would be better on a platform with an adjustable buttstock. But fixed stock works fine
Would you recommend this?
Yes, I would recommend to a friend
fun
Not only cute and fun. It seems to be useful too, I mounted it on a retro ar15 that resembles the M16 that I carried in Nam for 15 mos at the time of the Tet offensive. I haven't shot it yet.
Quality
Technically, it
Recommendation
This is not a review but an observation and I don't currently own. In today's world, you should offer an illuminated option for low light conditions. Plenty of 20-30 yr older mil spec optics with illumination. I owned one of the older Colt originals not illuminated.
Well made, but...
My best friend has one of the original Colt scopes from the early 80s, and I always thought it was very cool, so when Brownells brought these back I just had to get one. They are very well made, solid, and gives any carry handle AR a neat retro look. The problem is, this is not a very easy or comfortable scope to use. This is because the eye relief is so close that you literally have to have your nose almost touching the carry handle to get a good sight picture. I have two carry handle ARs, one A2 style, and one CAR style. On the A2, with it's long buttstock, you have to slide your cheek so far up the stock that it turns into a very unnatural shooting position. With the CAR, you have to slide the stock in 1-2 positions to get a clear sight picture, which is fine except now your trigger hand/arm is so close to the body that it becomes an awkward position. So, this has become a cool retro ornament - maybe, if I ever build a rifle just for show, I can put the scope on that, as it is very nice to look at.
With Exceptions
I wanted to use this scope with an A2 stock, but the eye relief was not attainable, the tunnel effect as it were. Changed over to a collapsible stock pushed all the way forward and that did the trick. The next issue is the check weld, The scop sits higher than the open sights and it is workable but need a cheek piece riser to correctly address this issue.
The windage and elevation do not have "click" feedback. A head of a bullet case is needed to make adjustments. Although the windage dial can be move with fingertips a case head works better.
No scope caps or covers provided.
Other than those items, the unit is made well, looks good and the optics are clear and bright. Cross hairs center will cover a 1" circle at 100 yards.
Another choice is to go with a 1-4x scope with a 1-piece scope mount or a 3/4 riser and medium rings for about the same price. No check weld problem with that combo. If the "Retro" look is what is desired, then go for it.
I have not used the bullet drop compensator and can't comment on its effect on accuracy beyond 100 yards.
