ALUMA-HYDE® II

ALUMA-HYDE® II Reviews & Ratings

ALUMA-HYDE II

The special feature of Aluma-Hyde II (and the reason for its development) is its increased resistance to bore cleaners, solvents and other cleaning chemicals, even trichloroethylene. Today’s family of fast, aggressive bore cleaners really do a terrific job getting dirty gun bores sparkling clean, but they can wreak particular havoc with any other finish they contact. After full cure, Aluma-Hyde II proved solvent-proof to all but the most aggressive, copper-removing bore solvents. Aluma-Hyde II is formulated with a hard-curing epoxy base that contains additional, high-density pigment for a durable finish that sticks to all properly prepared aluminum and alloy surfaces, steel and plastics - it’s great on synthetic stocks. Aluma-Hyde II is available in a variety of colors to help the gunsmith match the vast number of applications found in the average gunshop. Aluma-Hyde II dries to the touch in only minutes and reaches full cure in about a week. Absolutely no primer coat is required for a tough, durable, abrasion-resistant, rustproof finish that blends beautifully and compliments all gun finishing applications.

Each can of Aluma-Hyde II is now supplied with a Clean Out Nozzle, required to be used before each use of the paint to prevent clogs in the Nozzle and Pickup Tube. Aluma-Hyde Clean Out Nozzles allow nearly unrestricted pressure to flow through the pickup tube and nozzle to clear out any semi-hardened paint that may be in the pickup tube. Once clear, replace with the original spray nozzle and start your project. When used correctly, this will ensure a smooth, sputter free paint application free of clumps or inconsistencies.

Additional Clean Out Nozzles can be purchased as singles, 430107431, or in a 12-pack, 084179004. Clean Out Nozzles are not intended for finish spraying.

SPECS: 12 oz. (340 g) aerosol can.

INSTRUCTIONS:

PREP THE SURFACE: NO priming required on clean, bare metal or anodized surfaces. Surface should be dry and free of oil, wax, dirt, loose paint, and any other contaminants. Painted surfaces should be washed with a cleaner degreaser. If cleaning parts with abrasive blasting, make sure blasting media is oil- and silicone-free. Test a small area for color compatibility and adhesion.

• Unpainted aluminum: Abrasive blast to achieve desired surface look/texture.

• Unpainted steel: Remove rust by sanding or abrasive blasting.

• Fiberglass: Sand lightly, then wash with soap and water or clean with a quality cleaner degreaser.

• Wood: Seal or fill surface. ALUMA-HYDE II can be applied over polyurethane and varnish finishes but not over linseed oil or tung oil finishes.

PREP CAN: For best results, use between 70° F and 90° F (not below 65° F). Shake can vigorously until the ball inside rattle; then shake for 2 minutes more to achieve correct color and texture.

INITIAL CLEARING SPRAY: Before spraying work surface, point can in safe direction and depress valve. Press until spray is consistent in color and consistency. The cleanout nozzle can be used in this step for previously used, or even new cans. The cleanout nozzle is used to ensure any residue or buildup is easily ejected from the can. Simply pull the standard nozzle upwards off the can and press the cleanout nozzle down in its place (be careful to point can in safe direction when pressing downwards, as can may discharge spray).

Cleanout Nozzles are included with each can of Aluma-Hyde purchased from Brownells and is available separately. Search item number 430107431.

SPRAY IT ON: Hold can approximately 12” away from the work surface and fully depress valve on top to start the spray. Shake can periodically during application process.

LET IT CURE: This is a critical step in getting a truly tough, long-lasting finish! If a second coat is needed, it should be applied within 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, Aluma-Hyde II must be allowed to cure 10-14 days before recoating.

• Dries to a light touch in approximately 10-15 minutes. Wait 24 hours or more before extensive handling.

• Complete cure time caries depending on film thickness, temperature, and humidity

• Cure time can be reduced by circulating warm air (90°F max.) or placing part in direct sunlight.

• Aluma-Hyde II can be “speed cured” by baking the part for 3.5 hours at 195°F. Allow part to cool before applying another coat.

Still Junk
This is my second review of both the OD green & Coyote. Brownells sent me a replacement for each color after the first two cans proved to be defective. The replacement cans came from separate batch dates and the ball rattled which the previous cans did not. I bought a paint mixer and set the cans to mix for about 5 min. Once again the Coyote would not even spray, they are completely clogged and I have already used all my spray out nozzles on the original cans. This product is absolute junk. If you want to spray your guns use Rustoleum or pay for Cerakote. After you factor in the cost of the paint, clear out nozzles, and extra spray nozzles because they clog even on cans that supposedly work you are spending nearly $40 a color. In my opinion, I'd rather just cerakote. Alumahyde just doesn't spray well, even after clearing out the nozzles with a metal pick and thoroughly mixing the product it still sprayed horribly. I don't see how Brownells continues to promote and sell a product that is defective. I've been painting for nearly 3 decades and this product is by far the worst I have ever used by a substantial margin. Save yourself from the headache and disappointment, buy Rustoleum Camo or Cerakote.

Bad paint in the can
I received the paint can that was clogged up before spraying the first drop. Customer service refuses to answer the follow up to the email that they sent me. I've now got a gun that's disabled, half painted and I can't hunt.

Aluma-Hyde Matte Black paint
Purchase Aluma-Hyde Matte Black paint in May of 2023. Did not try using until December. My mistake. Paint wouldn't even start to spray. Can was stored in my house and was never exposed to cold weather. Shook can for over 10 minutes and tried warming it up in hot water, with no success. $20 bucks down the drain.

Aluma-Hyde Magpul FDE
I should have listened to the prior reviews. Purchased and received in a timely manner, but application was terrible. Followed all the instructional videos Brownell posted and even went as far as to heating the can up in 110 degree water, timed shaking the can for over 10 minutes, but paint splattered to the point I had to sand it all off. I am not a rookie at painting with a rattle can. I have had great success with all of Brownells products in the past. One note that may be of importance. The can was delivered on a 35 degree day, so the paint may have froze, at some point, during transit.

DEFECTIVE
After spending nearly 10hrs stripping, prepping, and disassembling several firearms I decided to try a few test sprays of the OD green & Coyote. The Coyote wouldn't spray at all. It was completely clogged despite warming the cans in hot water and shaking for nearly ten minutes. The OD sprayed a foam like silly string then clogged immediately. I used 6 of their clear out nozzles trying to get the cans to work but they just clogged. I finally gave up and contacted Brownells to have the cans replaced. They are sending out a replacement order however, the Alumahyde product is hit or miss. The 2 min mixing directions on the can are a total joke. You need to shake these things for at least ten minutes just to get them to spray, I requested a different batch number and will post another review given the replacements actually work.

Lots of hope but big disappointment.
I searched for a paint on the web for my AR and this was recommended. I watched all the Brownells' videos. I bought the paint and did all the prep work per the videos. I shook the can for minutes. What a mess! Goo squirted out of the can. I shook, cleaned the tip, sprayed again and again. I tried to paint the parts but the paint would not lay on smoothly. It was more of a bumpy lumpy mess. Days of prep wasted.

Waste of time and money.
This 'paint' would not even spray. It just spurted. Thick mess with globs of goop spitting out. And believe me I wanted it to work, I had several hours of parts prep and was all ready to go. I honestly shook that can for over 20 minutes trying to get it to work to no avail. I was extremely upset and disappointed. Maybe I just got a dud, I don't know. But at over 20 bucks and over a week waiting for it for nothing, I expected more.

Avoid this product
The was totally unusable. After following all directions on the can the first few seconds it looked like white silly string was shooting out of the can then nothing but brown goop which then caused the nozzle to completely clog. Total was of money and would not recommend.

Should have read the reviews....
Spray head clogged like everyone else has experienced. Sprayed chunks of paint and epoxy all over my handguard. I still haven't been able to remove the dried on residue.... I took my chances and paid for it. Final sales and cannot return or resolve...:(

Unfortunately
Really wanted to like this product, have bought from brownells for years. Could have had a bad bottle but shook can for 10+ minutes and sprayed chunky and ruined the project. Was slightly cool outside but had sitting in sun for an hour, about 75 outside. Bought 2 bottles dont want to try another project unfortunately.
