Great Bluing Solution
I have found that the best way to use this product that produces a blue that is almost as good as hot bluing is as follows:
1. Clean polish the surface with sandpaper to 320 or 400 grit. Your choice.
2.Thoroughly degrease the item. Use paint thinner, mineral spirits or lighter fluid. Then use dishwashing soap like dawn to scrub the metal with a non marring pad. You then use alcohol to make sure that it is very clean. Do not touch it with bare hands.
3.Apply Oxpho-Blue with cotton patch using clean gloves. Let it develop a some surface rust.
4.Get a pot fill it with enough water to cover your pieces and let it boil.
5. Dunk the parts in boiling water and let boil for 4 to 5 minutes.
6. Remove the parts and reapply a new coat of bluing and then put back in the boiling water.
7, Repeat this 5 to 6 times and then wipe away the bluing residue with 0000 steel wool using water as a lubricant.
8. Reapply bluing solution and place in boil pot again.
9.Remove from boiling water and scrub with 0000 steel wool again. Do this forcefully to get an even surface.
10.I use motor oil to then go over the surface with 0000 wool soaked in motor oil to achieve an even surface.
11.I use WD-40 or equivalent to make sure that all of the surfaces are oiled to stop the bluing and rusting.
When I have done this it results in beautiful finish which has been very abrasion resistant and produces a nice dark blue color.
It is not that hard to do, but it produces really good results for me.
