OXPHO-BLUE®

OXPHO-BLUE® Reviews & Ratings

Originally developed for the occasional bluer who is not equipped to completely polish a gun prior to bluing, Oxpho Blue - because of its ease of application and remarkably superior results - has become a favorite of the professional gunsmith as well. With Oxpho-Blue, all you need do in most cases, is dampen a piece of cotton flannel and give the area a good rubbing. The chemical goes through the oil on the gun, removes thin rust and blues the steel underneath. No after-rust. For looks, the final finish was not intended to approach the beauty of the well-polished, hot-blued gun. It has developed, however, that in the hands of a careful craftsman, not only is the Oxpho-Blue finish beautiful, but it is also more durable and weather resistant than any other known chemical finish. Oxpho-Blue has other outstanding features worthy of note:

  1. Absolutely no after-rust.
  2. Phosphate-like surface forms under the blue.
  3. Rust removing qualities of the solution, making it unnecessary to remove mild rust in the usual manner.
  4. "Wetting" characteristics of the solution, giving it the ability to penetrate oil, dirt, etc., on the surface of the gun; blue the metal underneath; remove rust and dirt; leave the gun blued and ready for oiling.
  5. Beauty and high durability of the finish: vigorous rubbing with No. 0 steel wool is one of our favorite application methods - the more rubbing, the more brilliant it comes and, since abrasion is part of the process, normal contact from gun cases, brush and clothing won't wear your bluing. (Note: It is possible to get a surface so dense with Oxpho-Blue that water will puddle on it!)
  6. For Neighbor Kid and Mr. Average Sportsman, a beat-up gun can be made to look quite presentable by following this recent application technique; dampen a shoe shine cloth with Oxpho-Blue and blue the gun with a shoe shine motion - without taking too much trouble to remove old dirt, grease, rust, etc. This particular gimmick actually obsoletes all other kinds of bluing for retail sale, for any youngster can make his old man's gun look quite presentable. For gun club members, neighborhood shooters, etc., one bottle takes care of the lot. (The rub-on features works wonders on tools and instruments which have been blackened and show bright along the edges: just dampen a cloth with Oxpho-Blue, rub the bright areas briskly and they are as black as before, but tougher.)

SPECS: 4 fl. oz. (118ml), or 32 fl. oz.

Good for re-bluing
I am re-building an SKS and it was painted with engine enamel when I bought it. I disassembled and cleaned the entire rifle stripping the paint and old bluing. The first time I attempted it I screwed it up! But, I went back and re-read the instructions on the bottle and re-blued and WOW!! It really looks good for a cold blue application. I will be using this again and recommending to all my gun-nut buddies! Thanks

Good Stuff!
This stuff is by far the best home blue you can get IMHO. I have tried many but soon the blue rubs off and it never last long. This stuff seems to darken more over time??? Warning wear rubber gloves I didn't and now my hands a stained from the metal chemical reaction. It has been 4 days now and my hands still look like I was digging coal LOL.

Bad design
The product worked very well, however, the material that was used to cover the opening of the bottle was some form of metal. Thus when i put the blueing in my gun cabinet and came back a week later the whole botlle was ruined due to the oxidation of the remainder of the metallic cover.

Does a decent job, didn't hold like i ex
Used this to do a touch job on a 11-87. At first it looked amazing and I was really impressed at the ease of this product and the results I had with it. But after a few days of use deer hunting the cold blue was only noticeable by the dark spots. The over all coloring left and it ended up not looking much better than the start. For a quick small touch up, this would be great. I ended up having to just duracoat the shotgun.

try it, you might like it. I did, work ok
This is one of those products that when you use it, it does ok, and blue darkens a little to cover up. It will not make it new again, but makes your gun look better than it was before you used it. 3 stars

Something has changed
I have been using the oxpho blue successfully for the last 20 years. This batch I just purchased ( I understand there has been a change to the formula?) is not up to the usual standard. The finish is light and blotchy.

save your time and money
I was trying to reblue a complete handgun, a Arcus 94, a browning hi power clone. All old bluing was removed, the handgun was glass beaded, boiled in distilled water and cleaned with acetone. I applied oxpho-blue with a clean cotton ball. The bluing would not blue the steel without streaking and splotching.I could not get this bluing to blend in at all with oil free steel wool. This not my first bluing job. Oxpho-blue failed with awful results.

This stuff sucks!
Glad I didn't pay much because this stuff was a total waste of time and money! The directions on how to apply suck and when used as advised, no blueing took place. I went to YouTube and learned to heat the metal up and that seemed to help. What I was left with was a uneven blue with plenty of blotchy marks. Also, the blueing isn't consistent no matter how many coats. I have a receiver that is dark and blotchy and a top cover and other parts that are almost brown! No matter how much I apply, nothing seems to help. All parts were sanded down to bare metal before blueing so the prep was good.
