OXPHO-BLUE®

OXPHO-BLUE® Reviews & Ratings

Originally developed for the occasional bluer who is not equipped to completely polish a gun prior to bluing, Oxpho Blue - because of its ease of application and remarkably superior results - has become a favorite of the professional gunsmith as well. With Oxpho-Blue, all you need do in most cases, is dampen a piece of cotton flannel and give the area a good rubbing. The chemical goes through the oil on the gun, removes thin rust and blues the steel underneath. No after-rust. For looks, the final finish was not intended to approach the beauty of the well-polished, hot-blued gun. It has developed, however, that in the hands of a careful craftsman, not only is the Oxpho-Blue finish beautiful, but it is also more durable and weather resistant than any other known chemical finish. Oxpho-Blue has other outstanding features worthy of note:

  1. Absolutely no after-rust.
  2. Phosphate-like surface forms under the blue.
  3. Rust removing qualities of the solution, making it unnecessary to remove mild rust in the usual manner.
  4. "Wetting" characteristics of the solution, giving it the ability to penetrate oil, dirt, etc., on the surface of the gun; blue the metal underneath; remove rust and dirt; leave the gun blued and ready for oiling.
  5. Beauty and high durability of the finish: vigorous rubbing with No. 0 steel wool is one of our favorite application methods - the more rubbing, the more brilliant it comes and, since abrasion is part of the process, normal contact from gun cases, brush and clothing won't wear your bluing. (Note: It is possible to get a surface so dense with Oxpho-Blue that water will puddle on it!)
  6. For Neighbor Kid and Mr. Average Sportsman, a beat-up gun can be made to look quite presentable by following this recent application technique; dampen a shoe shine cloth with Oxpho-Blue and blue the gun with a shoe shine motion - without taking too much trouble to remove old dirt, grease, rust, etc. This particular gimmick actually obsoletes all other kinds of bluing for retail sale, for any youngster can make his old man's gun look quite presentable. For gun club members, neighborhood shooters, etc., one bottle takes care of the lot. (The rub-on features works wonders on tools and instruments which have been blackened and show bright along the edges: just dampen a cloth with Oxpho-Blue, rub the bright areas briskly and they are as black as before, but tougher.)

Great results.
I was given an old Pietta black powder revolver that was VERY rusty and pitted. After a lot of prep work to remove the rust I finally had the bare metal finish I wanted. I did a final cleaning with acetone, then warmed the parts in the oven (150 degrees) until they were quite warm. I then applied the Oxpho bluing and the bluing worked fine without out any streaking or areas that didn't take the bluing. Prep and cleaning is absolutely vital to achieve a good result. I let the parts cool, then very lightly burnished them with OOO steel wool. I then reheated them in the oven and applied a second coat of oxpho. The resulting bluing is a dark rich blue that exceeded my expectations. I must say this cold bluing formula is vastly superior to any of the other cold bluing products on the market. Follow the instructions verbatim and be sure the part is CLEAN prior to applying the bluing and you will not likely be disappointed. I am going to buy a couple more bottles of this to redo some shotguns that I have.

the blue stuff
this product is awesome if the existing material is removed with fine wire wheel then apply bluing with abrasive pad don't be stingy with the bluing and don't stop rubbing until all the rainbows are gone and finish looks even wipe off immediately it will look cloudy rub with 0000 steelwool add light oil looks great!!

Bluing made easy
I will start by saying after reading the other reviews I feel like a hack. I took the product at its word I did not buff or strip the oil off the gun. I took a cotton ball and saturated it with the solution. I rubbed all surfaces, the finish darkened as I was applying the oxpho and then I wiped it down with a paper towel. I then used steel wool to buff it. It took the darkness down but it also became brighter. I repeated this process 4 times after the last time I added a thin coat of the oxpho blue after it darkened I wiped it down with a paper towel and then oiled it with Hopps. It did not rust in between and the finish on the gun was splotchy before I started but after the process it blued even with little to no effort. This took all of 20 minutes, I am planning on refinishing my Wingmaster project gun tonight.

Oxpho-Blue
This is one of the best bluing solutions on the market. It is easy to use and leaves a nice, dark finish. I highly recommend it!!

Works very well for cold blue, buy this!
Provided you properly degrease this is excellent. I was restoring a old but modified 1911 with it myself. Used TCE, followed the instructions and applied it until I was satisfied on the parts after a detail stripping. Once the parts were finished black I stopped the process by soaking in CLP to preserve things and prevent further corrosion. Wiped it down and you'd be hard pressed to tell it wasn't factory blued in boiling gasoline by Colt and never was taken from the box. 100% satisfied myself and I can't believe anyone would rate it lower than a 5.

This works!
This is the process I used and it turned two pistols from the '30s that had zero finish and some corrosion into firearms I'm proud to own. 1 - Clean the guns with Hoppes #9 then buff the corrosion off with some "Scotchbrite" pads. I used 3 pads each by the time I was done. Used some fine wet sand paper very lightly on a couple of rough areas. 2 - Washed the parts with Denatured Alcohol, used a plastic tray, poured it over the parts and used a clean 11/2" paint brush to get it everywhere. 3 - Baked the parts at 180 deg. F for 20 minutes (until risen and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean :-) ) 4 - Removed the parts from the oven in stages so that I could move only what I was bluing to the blue tank straight from the oven. I bought the 32 oz. bottle so I could submerse the parts and pieces completely. 5 - Let soak in the Oxpho Blue about an estimated minute or until I felt that the color had come up to where I wanted it. Occasionally rocked the tank and/or flipped the larger parts like the frame and slide to make sure there was good coverage. 6 - Using rubber gloves removed the parts straight to a water bath. Let them sit while doing something else for a minute. Swish them around, took them to a shop sink and washed them off rubbing the charcoal like build up. Let dry. 7 - Used very fine steel wool (don't remember the grit because I bought it a long time ago...) to lightly polish the finish. 8 - Sprayed with WD-40 to make sure all the water was out and washed again with Denatured Alcohol. Not sure if both those were necessary but I did it anyway. 9 - Cleaned and buffed everything with a soft cloth and lubricated with Rem Oil and reassembled. Given the results I am impressed with the outcome. It's better than a lot of others say they have gotten looking almost as good as a factory finish. If I put it on a buffer it would probably be hard to tell it was not a factory finish. The color is consistent and deep. Many posters, and the Brownells site, say that proper preparation is key and given my experience I'd say it's not all that hard either; it did take a few hours time though.

As good as advertised
I had read positive and a few negative reviews on OXPHO Blue Prior to purchacing and after my experience with it I believe those with negative reviews were applying incorrectly.I have a 70 year old Arisaka that was in horrible shape.I took it down to white polished metal blued it to a beautiful finish that has performed very well. Tips:CLEAN,CLEAN,CLEAN!NO OIL ON SURFACE!Lightly warm surface with torch and apply as directed using as many applications as nessasary to achive desired hue. Use 0000 steel wool soaked in oil to buff to a beautiful finish.Oil heavily and let set for several days. Remove excess oil, reassemble and you are good to go.Great stuff!

Best Cold Blue Product
This is very easy to use. I used this on new parts I had made. Since I don't have the room to set up a proper bluing tank, I've been looking for an alternative that wouldn't require me sending parts to someone else to finish. I found out about this in a blog and decided to try it. I just degreased the metal parts and put them in a jar and poured this stuff on it and shook up the jar for a minute and remove them and rinsed them off with cold water. I did 100 small parts about the size of AR-15 triggers with 1 (4oz) bottle and they all came out evenly colored.
