BROWNELLS - Slip Ring Aluminum Black

I do like how these look once you get them installed. I do wish Brownells offered them with a knurled surface finish though the slotted rings look good as well. You might want to make them out of a tougher steel rather than aluminum, just my opinion.

Perfect in every way

The slip ring is nicely made but fragile to a certain degree. Its very easy to scratch up the finish or put a ding in it. I have two of these slip rings in my spare parts box that I kept but they both have dings in them. They were caused by the barrel nut tool slipping and putting a ding into a part of the slip ring. Im not sure why I kept these damaged parts except that these slip rings are expensive and they will still work. Its mostly cosmetic. Very few places sell these early style slip rings so I usually buy them from Brownells.

I had the same thing happen as another reviewer mentioned. I used a high quality barrel nut wrench to torque the nut down but it slipped once and put a dent into the slip ring. I ordered two so I was able to replace it easily and was much more careful with the wrench. It works well and looks nice but if your wrench slips it will easily damage the slip ring. Im not sure what kind of metal its made of but it must be very soft. Ive used these slip rings several other times and the same thing happened. Now, if I need this early style slip ring I automatically order two in case I mess up the first one. I have several damaged slip rings in my parts box because I didnt have it in me to just throw them away, even though theyre all damaged in one way or another. Its, unfortunately, just not made with a higher quality metal.

As a retro builder my only gripe is that the finish is in a deep black. Most of my builds will be in a medium to dark gray. The quality of this slip ring is very nice but I will be refinishing it.
