What is the APEX TACTICAL SPECIALTIES INC. - Evolution K- & L-Frame Hammer for S&W Revolvers?

Originally designed as a semi-drop in replacement for Performance Center revolvers, the Apex Evolution IV K/L-Frame Hammer is redesigned using the same pinned sear and stirrup found on the Performance Center hammer. Additionally, the Apex Evolution IV Hammer replaces MIM components found in Smith & Wesson non-Performance Center revolvers and Performance Center revolvers made after January 2012. Manufactured from heat treated 17-4 Ph stainless steel, the hammer is wire EDM and CNC machined then surface ground to ensure consistent performance. Expected Results

  • This hammer converts your revolver to Double Action Only (DAO)
  • Lacks a hammer spur for cocking to single action

Works in current production Smith & Wesson K-Frame and L-Frame centerfire revolvers only.

Expensive but worth it
No gunsmithing required for my 686-6. Note the kit includes new rebound spring, firing pin, and firing pin spring.

Nice Hammer
Very nice product. Installed into my S&W 686 Pro series. Easy installation, no gunsmithing required. Minor polishing with stone internal contact points. For my pistol, the Duty/Carry Rebound Slide Spring gave the lightest pull weight. I also installed a Wolff reduced power rib mainspring. Once completed, the trigger pull was shorter and smoother. However, the weight was at 6.5, not the 4 lb. stated on the APEX website description. I can adjust the rebound spring to 4, but the strike is too light and does not work with Winchester primers. After discussion with APEX, they suggest only using Federal primers in order to reach the goal of 4-5 lb. trigger pull. I just acquired a brick of Federal, and will try them in the future.

No more light strikes
1 month of ownership, installed on S&W 617 that I put a spring kit in. I had 2 adjacent cylinder that would not fire. The sear needed some stoning to reset, other than that it dropped right in. A gun that has wear on the trigger may drop in, my gun was new. It's a little pricy but it does what it's supposed to. 300 rounds so far and no issues.
