SMITH & WESSON - Extractor Rod, Over 2-1/2" Barrel, SS

Ordered this factory replacement for a badly chewed up one. Came in sealed bag but needed to be cleaned because of very fine metal particles from manufacturing. Used a pipe cleaner to get inside and a used a touch of CLP. Perfect with no fitting required and matched original stainless finish. This went on a 66-2.

I needed to find a replacement extractor rod for my S&W L-frame 686 Plus 4" Stainless revolver. Originally, I searched for this part online and bought a similar extractor rod from another retailer, but the one I received looked like it was used, about to rust and the threads were galled, so I returned it. I later found out Brownells had this part available and so I ordered this one for barrels over 2-1/2" in SS for my 4" 686+. I was pleased to find out that extractor rod came new in the yellow sealed plastic bag. This extractor rod does require some fitting (on the end opposite of the threads where the diamond pattern texturing is) to get the extractor rod to reliably engage and release from the locking bolt. My original extractor rod measured 2.6650 with digital calipers, so I patiently took my time to file the end of the new extractor with my Spyderco ceramic file and continued to remeasure it until the length was the same as my original. It probably took me about a couple of hours to file the extractor rod to spec, then afterwards I gently reamed and deburred the sharp edges. In the end, the extractor rod is a perfect fit with both positive lockup and release.
