What is the HORNADY - 300 AAC Blackout 190gr Sub-X Flex Tip Expanding 20/Box?

Hornady 300 Blackout Subsonic Ammunition is designed for accuracy and performance below the speed of sound. The new 190 gr Sub-X™ (Subsonic - eXpanding) bullet features a lead core. Long grooves in its gilding metal jacket combine with the bullet’s flat profile and the patented Flex Tip® insert within its hollowpoint cavity to help it expand reliably at low velocities. Performance of the Hornady® Subsonic 300 Blackout load meets or exceeds FBI Protocol terminal ballistic test requirements.

Reviews Summary
Overall, customers find the SUBSONIC AMMO 300 AAC BLACKOUT 190GR FTE to be accurate and reasonably priced, particularly enjoying its performance when shooting suppressed. However, there are consistent issues with feeding in AR-15 magazines, which can affect reliability. Users recommend using specific magazines for optimal performance.
What Reviewers Are Saying
Feeding Issues
60%
Multiple reviewers highlight significant feeding issues in AR-15 platforms due to the design of the ammunition, particularly its flat-nose profile which causes jams. Many advise using specific magazine types to prevent these problems, emphasizing that compatibility is crucial for reliable performance.
Accuracy
50%
Many users praise the accuracy of the 190gr subsonic ammo, noting that it performs well at various distances and in different firearms. Reviewers specifically mention good performance in suppressed setups and the ability to achieve satisfying accuracy.
Magazine Compatibility
50%
Reviewers indicate that compatibility with magazines is essential for the performance of this ammo. Feedback suggests that AR-15 magazines should be avoided, particularly those designed for .223/5.56, while other magazine types like AR Stoner or GI mags work effectively.
Value for Money
40%
Customers mention the good sale price and availability of the ammo, considering it a reasonable purchase considering its performance. Overall, it is perceived as a solid option for subsonic ammo given the price point.
Use with Suppressors
35%
Many customers enjoy using this ammo with suppressors, praising how quiet and enjoyable it is to shoot. The subsonic nature of the round makes it particularly appealing for users interested in suppressed shooting.

Great subsonic ammo
This ammo was recommended by my local gun store for use in my Q LLC Honey Badger AR pistol with a 7" barrel and a Trash Panda suppressor. It is very quiet, and works well for personal defense purposes.

Fantastic Ammo
Using this in a Noveske N4 PDW with dedicated 300 BLK PMAGS and never had a problem. 500 rounds down range over the past few years with zero failures to feed or jams. Really fun to shoot suppressed. I’d shoot it more, but look at the price! Agree with previous reviewer on having the right mags to feed this ammo. AR-15 mags designed for .223/5.56 tend to have narrow front feed lips that will absolutely cause issues with larger (and flat-faced) rounds like 300 BLK. Keep in mind this is essentially a 30 caliber bullet in a 22 caliber case and your standard PMAG wasn’t designed for it. You can shoot some 300 BLK ammo from a .223/5.56 mag, just not this ammo.

High performance expanding subsonic.
I was very glad that I now have a reliably expanding subsonic load. Over penetration at CQB distances is not as much an issue anymore. Accuracy is excellent out of my 8 1/2 in suppressed barrel. The functionality or lack thereof mentioned in other review is a magazine problem not a rifle problem. Non of my Pmags work with this round. 30 Rd AR Stoner mags work flawlessly as well as the 20rd straight GI mags from Brownells. I'm sure there are others if you look further.

Accurate
From a AR 7.5" -1-7 twist-with suppressor. I get very good accuracy and pretty good mushroom through water jugs. Just under 1,000 ft/sec 10 ft from muzzle. Wish Hornady would come out with a 220 grainer.
