CROWN SAVER™ LATHE CENTER COVER

CROWN SAVER™ LATHE CENTER COVER Reviews & Ratings

These brass cones take much of the anxiety out of lathe-turning a perfectly good barrel with an already finished crown. Insert a Crown Saver between the muzzle and lathe or mill center before fluting, chambering, polishing, or threading for a muzzle brake, and you can rest assured you won’t harm the rifling or ding the crown. Each brass cone is machined to within .0002" or less concentricity, making using a Crown Saver as accurate as direct barrel contact against the center. With a Crown Saver, you virtually eliminate any chance of swaging the rifling. It stays seated and will not spin in the bore when the barrel is chucked in the lathe. Small fits bores .17 to .45 caliber. For best results, do not use Crown Saver more than once on barrels of the same caliber.

SPECS: 360 brass. Maximum diameter. Small - .500".

Another great product from Brownell's
I have a great many jobs installing muzzle brakes and silencers that require threading of the barrel. I use the crown saver on the end of the tail stock to protect the existing barrel crown. I have not had any problems with them while threading the barrel. There is no down side to these.

Crown savers did not stabilize barrel
We found that the brass crown savers did not stabalize the barrel enough to prevent a very slight wabble. My machinist friend suspects that this may be due to the rifling. We noticed that the crown savers were scored pretty heavily after use. We ended up using a regular chucked centering cone. It took the wabble out while turning the threads but I need to test fire the barrels to see if we did any damage to the crowns.
