Glad I Did it!
This completed the Magpul upgrade to my MAK-90, replacing all the Chinese lumber. The lower handguard required significant fitting to my rifle, which was expected. The upper was a breeze to put on. I love the heat shield, the look, fit, feel, and the lightness. Plus they don't wiggle when locked to the barrel, like the ChiCom ones always did.
Solid
Very Solid handguard with a very solid heat shield inside on the lower handguard. No heatshield on the gas tube cover.
AK47/AK74 AKM MOE Handguard
If you install this on a MAK-90, It needs some fitting; you'll need a Dremel, some calipers, and small blocks of wood to steady the Dremel. It took me about 2 hours, but it's well worth it makes it much easier to get a grip on the rifle and control it.
Polish Tantal
Bottom piece fit perfectly on my Polish Tantal. Due to the unique gas tube design of the gun I had to stick with the original tube up top but everything fit together perfectly using the original hand guard retainer. Id hoped for a longer Zhukov hand guard but I did not want to remove/ destroy the stock hand guard retainer. Larger diameter fore end feels much better than the original.
Actual heat shielding!
I can actually fire a couple of mag dumps before I change my grip now. That will always be a problem with the ak platform, but now it really isn't a major deficit. I had a little trouble with the fitment, but that's to be expected. Nothing a dremel, and a jeweler's hammer couldn't solve.
A great way to modernize your AK
I would like to start off by saying that I am not an AK fanboy. I always found the stock to be too short and the grip too small, so I have been looking to bring my AK into this century. I have been installing the MOE furniture on my WASR 10/63 Size: The lower section of the magpul forearm is longer than the original, slightly wider than the receiver and flat on the bottom. The top section is approximately the same size as the original. Fit: The instructions say that the new furniture may be tight, they are not joking. I managed to force the lower handguard on after some generous pounding. The upper part was a real PITA, I would not attempt to install this part without a good sturdy vice. I was also forced to file down the edges to get the gas tube to clip back into place. Overall I am very pleased, the handguard can accommodate a cleaning rod which is great. It is magpul so I expect a certain level of quality.
