Don’t start a build without it!
There’s nothing worse than putting your new rifle together without the proper tools and putting marks and scratches on it, that you have to live with forever. Before you start, make sure you have a good punch set and make the job look professional.
Good tool set
Needed a good punch set to replace my old one. This one has surpassed all expectations.
AR15 pin punch set
Seem well made.I like that it comes in a locking case
Tool kit
This kit is very useful. Nice to have the right tool for the job at hand.
Fancy packaging, suboptimal finishing
The good: It has the essential punches and punch holders as advertised. (Note: Doesn't have a center punch that you'd need to properly stake certain areas like a receiver end plate, but everything else is there.) The bad: This is about "Wal-Mart" Chinesium consumer grade material. The roll pin holders were shiny on the outside, but all of the coating / finishing didn't extend to the important areas that actually hold the pins. The interior of punch holders is covered in flash rust, which then deposits itself on your roll pins. Overall: This set is worth consideration for a tinkerer, but is not something a professional user should consider purchasing.
Misleading description, useless punches
Im an experienced AR builder. The description is misleading. This says these are all Roll Pin Punches. Not all of these are roll pin punches. When you get the box it says this, but not in the description. You get FLAT 3/32 punch. That is useless for installing the forward assist 3/32 ROLL PIN retaining pin which is what its for, because its a ROLL PIN so you need a ROLL PIN punch, not a flat punch. Unless you just like damaging pins and giving yourself a headache. Why in the world Real Avid did this i do not know. The staking punch is so rounded off you couldnt stake play dough with it. The hammer seems ok, and the roll pin holder tweezers might be useful for something, though I usually just use a classic roll pin holder. If you are new to building ARs and are looking for a good set of ROLL pin punches, this is not it. Buy the Brownells set or Grace set (I have both)or even the wheeler set ( I have not tried it, but I really like wheeler stuff). If you buy this kit, youll end up frustrated, and buying more punches. This does not justify the price of this kit.
