Quick Tip: Caleb's Range Bag Toolkit

Introduction and Why a Range Tool Kit Matters

Hi, Caleb from Brownells here. In today’s Tech Tip, we are going over my preferred range tool kit. If you spend much time shooting, you already know that small issues can shut down a range session fast. Loose optic screws, shifting mounts, sight adjustments, or a stubborn roll pin can all bring things to a halt.

The goal of a good range tool kit is simple. Fix problems quickly and get back to shooting.

Fix It Sticks Field Armor Kit: Complete but Large

For a long time, I have relied on the Fix It Sticks Field Armor Kit. It is a multi-firearm platform kit that includes just about everything you could need for general firearm maintenance.

That is both the best and worst part of it.

It has everything. But because of that, it is larger and takes up more room in a range bag. If we are hosting an event or need full coverage for multiple platforms, I will bring the entire kit or even the full toolbox. But for everyday range use, much of it can be overkill.

That is where a streamlined setup makes sense.

Building a Compact Kit with a Magpul DAKA Organizer

To slim things down, I use a Magpul DAKA organizer case. I chose the orange version because it is easy to spot in a range bag or on the ground.

Inside that case, I build a base tool kit around the essentials. Before heading to the range, I remove a single bit sleeve from the Fix It Sticks kit. That sleeve includes:

  • Slotted screwdriver bits
  • Standard and metric hex bits
  • Common Torx sizes

This one sleeve handles the majority of fastener work I encounter at the range.

Brownells Magnetip Screwdriver and Torque Limiters

I pair those bits with a Brownells Magnetip screwdriver handle. This is the LE size, which is slightly shorter and fits perfectly in the organizer case. The Magnetip system is strong, secure, and ideal for working with interchangeable bits.

In addition to the bit sleeve, I bring two torque limiters from the Fix It Sticks kit:

  • 0 to 65 inch-pounds
  • 0 to 25 inch-pounds with finer increments

Proper torque is critical when mounting optics, tightening scope rings, or securing accessory mounts. Using a torque limiter helps prevent stripped screws and maintains consistent, repeatable results.

Glock Tools and Hex Wrenches

For Glock work, I carry two dedicated tools:

  • Glock pin punch
  • Glock front sight tool

With just those two tools, you can handle most common Glock maintenance tasks at the range.

I also include Bondhus ball end hex wrenches. These are extremely versatile and allow you to approach fasteners at slight angles. They are reliable, durable, and a favorite for both bench work and field use.

Multitasker Nano Tools for Optics

In the side pouch, I keep Multitasker Nano tools. One is configured for Aimpoint optics, and the other handles additional sight and optic adjustments.

These compact tools are excellent for red dot adjustments and minor optic corrections. I keep them attached to paracord so they are not easily lost.

Roll Pin Punches, Socket Adapter, and Extras

In the main pocket, I keep:

  • A socket adapter that works with the Magnetip handle
  • Common AR-15 roll pin punches
  • Extra slotted and Torx bits

With a hammer nearby in the range bag or truck, those roll pin punches allow you to handle most common AR-15 maintenance issues. From trigger guard pins to bolt catch work, you are covered for basic field repairs.

What This Range Tool Kit Covers

This compact range tool kit is designed for quick, practical fixes:

  • Tightening or re-torquing optic mounts
  • Adjusting red dot sights
  • Performing Glock sight or pin work
  • Servicing AR-15 components
  • Handling general fastener and hardware issues

It is not meant to replace a full gunsmithing bench. It is a lightweight, efficient solution that keeps you prepared without overloading your range bag.

If you are building your own range bag setup, focus on versatility, proper torque control, and platform-specific essentials. A well-thought-out tool kit ensures that small mechanical issues do not cut your training day short.

As always, if you need help selecting gunsmithing tools, firearm maintenance equipment, or building out your range tool kit, give our tech line a call. We are here to help.
