Who You Callin' "Short Stuff"? - A Replica of the FIRST AR-15 Carbine
Before there was the M4 or the CAR-15 or the XM177, there was the Model 605 - Colt's very first effort at producing a carbine variant of the M16 rifle. And now, with the Brownells BRN-605®, for the first time EVER, you can own an affordable, nice-shooting reproduction of that first AR carbine. The Model 605 is basically a standard M16 with 4.5" lopped off the end of the A1 barrel. Why a measly 4.5"? Because they retained the rifle-length gas tube!
Like the original, the Brownells BRN-605® is built around our replicas of the XM16E1 upper and lower receivers (ours is called the XBRN16E1). The lower has the partial "fence" around the magazine release, while the upper has a forward assist, but no shell deflector. The entire bolt / carrier group is chrome plated, again like the original. The 15.5" A1-profile (skinny) barrel is capped by the standard 3-prong "duckbill" flash hider of early M16s. The hider is pinned and welded in place so you don't have to contend with NFA short-barreled rifle (SBR) regulations when you purchase a 605 upper. There's a forward assist, but no shell deflector.
Original 605s had reliability problems due to the short dwell time caused by the truncated barrel. We have eliminated that problem by enlarging the gas port to ensure your BRN-605® carbine runs smoothly. For best results, we recommend using M193-type ammunition with 55 grain bullets. We do not recommend steel case or underpowered ammunition.
Each BRN-605® comes with authentic black furniture of reinforced polymer that replicates the look of the original but is far more durable. It includes a fixed “Type D” buttstock and triangular cross-section handguard, for that iconic early M16 look we all know and love.
- Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO (.223 Remington compatible)
- 1-12" rifling for compatibility with modern ammo
- Forged-then-final-machined 7075 T6 aluminum receivers
- Windage-adjustable A1-type rear sight drum inside the carry handle
- Chrome-plated bolt / carrier group machined from 9310 carbon steel
- Constructed from all-new parts – no refurbs here!
OK, we admit the Model 605® was a pretty dorky-looking gun - sort of like the runt of an M16 litter. It's so odd looking in its pugnacious stubbiness that it's actually very cool. Go to the range with your BRN-605®, and you're unlikely to see another rifle like it on the firing line. Just be prepared to answer questions from your range mates before you get to start shooting.
