Quick Tip: Basic Glock Gen5 Maintenance
Caleb with Brownells here! In today's video, I want to go through the basic maintenance steps for the Gen 5 Glock. This guide will cover cleaning and lubrication to ensure your firearm remains in top condition. Let's jump right into it.
Tools and Preparation
Before we start, let's gather the tools we'll need:
- Cleaning rod and brush Patches and jag Bore snake (optional)
- Cleaning solvent (Hoppes #9)
- Gun oil (Sons of Liberty Spec 76)
- Q-tips Compressed air (optional)
Step 1: Safety Check First things first, ensure your firearm is unloaded. Remove the magazine and double-check that there is no round in the chamber.
Step 2: Basic Takedown To disassemble your Glock: Pull the slide slightly out of battery. Pull down the takedown lever on both sides. Release the slide and pull the trigger to remove the slide from the frame. Set the frame aside and focus on the slide.
Step 3: Remove Recoil Spring and Barrel Compress the recoil spring slightly and lift it out. Push up on the barrel from the bottom and lift it out of the slide.
Step 4: Cleaning the Barrel Wipe Down: Use a rag to wipe down the outside of the barrel. Brush the Bore: Using a brass-bristled brush on a coated rod, dip the brush in solvent and run it through the barrel multiple times. Run Patches: Use a jag to push dry patches through the bore until they come out clean. You can follow up with an oil patch for added protection.
Step 5: Cleaning the Slide Wipe down the slide with a rag. Use Q-tips to clean hard-to-reach areas like the striker safety and extractor. Brush the breach face to remove any buildup.
Step 6: Cleaning the Frame Use a brush to break up any debris inside the frame. Wipe down with a rag. Use Q-tips to clean small areas.
Step 7: Cleaning the Magazine Remove the base plate and take out the spring and follower. Wipe down the inside of the magazine with a rag. Apply dry lube to the spring and reassemble the magazine.
Step 8: Lubrication and Reassembly Lubricate the Slide: Apply a small amount of gun oil to the wear areas on the slide. Lubricate the Barrel: Apply a light coat of oil to the barrel, especially around the locking block and hood. Reassemble: Place the barrel back into the slide, followed by the recoil spring. Reattach the slide to the frame and ensure everything is functioning correctly.
