Introduction
Hey everyone, Caleb and Steve here from Brownells. In this Product Spotlight, we're taking a closer look at the Hornady Fireproof Safe, a surprisingly compact but capable safe that's perfect for storing pistols, ammo, documents, and other valuables around the house. Whether you're new to safes or looking for something smaller than a full-size vault, this one checks a lot of boxes.
A Solid Size with Room to Spare
Right out of the gate, the Hornady safe impressed us with its build and dimensions. It's 12 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 16.5 inches deep, offering a good amount of space without taking up too much room in a closet, office, or bedroom.
This isn’t just a bedside pistol safe. It’s big enough to hold a couple of handguns, some ammunition, and even a few small valuables. Caleb pointed out that it weighs about 49 to 50 pounds, which means it’s heavy enough to stay put but still manageable if you need to move it.
Fireproof and Secure
While it's designed with firearms in mind, this safe is also fireproof, making it a great choice for securing important documents, electronics, or keepsakes. It's marketed as a gun safe, but Steve and Caleb both agree you can store just about anything in it.
The safe includes pre-drilled holes and concrete anchor bolts, so you can easily bolt it down. That’s a big plus if you’re worried about someone walking off with it.
Easy Access with Redundant Features
Getting into the safe is easy thanks to its electronic keypad. Caleb demonstrates how you punch in your custom code, turn the handle, and the safe opens right up.
If the battery dies, no problem. The safe comes with a manual override key hidden inside a cleverly designed compartment behind the front panel. You can access it quickly, and the battery compartment is also located inside the door where it’s protected.
Built-In Light and Code Reset
One feature that really stood out was the built-in LED light mounted on the inside of the door. When you open the safe, the light automatically comes on. That’s very helpful if you're accessing it in low light.
Need to change your code? Just hold down the reset button inside the safe. No complicated steps required. Caleb even jokes that he didn’t bother reading the instructions because the process was that simple.
What Fits Inside
To give you an idea of the safe’s capacity, Caleb and Steve loaded it with some example items including:
- A Springfield Prodigy handgun
-
A box of Hornady Critical Defense ammo
-
A few humorous personal items like a framed photo and “Gundy Awards”
Even with those inside, there was still plenty of room left. Steve notes you could fit multiple handguns or swap in important documents, small electronics, or backup hard drives.
Removable, Adjustable Shelf
Inside the safe is a removable shelf that’s also adjustable. The shelf hooks into slots in the interior, and you can reposition it based on what you're storing. Caleb shows how the system works, noting that while it’s easy to use, it’s even easier when you’re not trying to do it on camera.
You could also slide in some file organizers or stackable bins if you’re using this for non-firearm storage. It’s a flexible layout that you can adapt to your needs.
Final Thoughts
For a safe that weighs under 50 pounds and fits in a closet or under a desk, the Hornady Fireproof Safe brings a lot to the table:
- Fire resistance
-
Secure electronic access with backup key
-
Plenty of internal space
-
Built-in LED lighting
-
Customizable interior
Steve calls it a really good safe, and Caleb agrees. It’s functional, intuitive, and hits the sweet spot between convenience and security.
If you’re looking for something bigger than a pistol box but not ready for a full-size safe, this is a solid choice.
