Product Spotlight: Garmin Range Products

Today

In this video, Caleb from Brownells demonstrates how Garmin’s cutting-edge shooting tech enhances long-range accuracy. Filmed at the range, Caleb walks through using a Garmin tactical smartwatch and compact chronograph with Applied Ballistics integration to achieve a first-round hit at 500 yards using a BRN-4 M38 DMR. He explains how the watch's GPS, ballistic calculator, and seamless data syncing streamline the entire process—from muzzle velocity measurement to dialing in scope adjustments. The video highlights the precision, convenience, and real-world shooting benefits of Garmin’s integrated ecosystem for serious marksmen and tech-savvy shooters alike.

What You Will Learn

Viewers will learn how to use Garmin’s smartwatch and chronograph in conjunction with the Applied Ballistics app to streamline long-range shooting. They’ll see step-by-step how to gather and sync muzzle velocity data, apply it to their ballistic profile, and dial in accurate scope adjustments—all without needing a phone or spotter.

Benefit

The video emphasizes how this tech simplifies the shooting process, improves accuracy, and saves time, making it a valuable resource for anyone looking to up their precision rifle game with smart, integrated tools.

Introduction

Hey everyone, Caleb from Brownells here. Today, I’m out at the range to showcase some of our new Garmin products, and how they can seriously improve your long-range shooting—while making you feel like you're in a Jason Bourne movie at the same time.

Let’s dive into the gear, how it works, and how I used it to nail a 500-yard first-round hit with a BRN-4 M38 build.

The Garmin Smartwatch: More Than Just a Fitness Tracker

Let’s start with the watch. This is one of Garmin’s tactical-style GPS smartwatches, and it’s loaded with features:

  • Built-in GPS
  • Heart rate and fitness tracking

  • Satellite time syncing

  • Text and phone alerts via Bluetooth

  • And most importantly for us today—Applied Ballistics integration

It’s essentially a smartphone for your wrist, but with specialized tools built for shooters. You can use it for fitness and day-to-day tasks, sure—but the ballistic calculator app is where it really shines on the range.

Compact Garmin Chronograph: Accurate and Pocket-Sized

Next up, the Garmin chronograph. This thing is impressive. Traditional chronographs are often bulky and awkward, but this one:

  • Fits in your pocket
  • Delivers accurate muzzle velocity readings

  • Syncs with Garmin smartwatches and the Applied Ballistics app

I mounted it a short distance in front of my muzzle and was ready to go in seconds. It’s compact, reliable, and easy to use. No big tripod setup or clunky screens—just plug, play, and shoot.

The Rifle and Ammo: BRN-4 M38 with 69gr SMK

For this test, I brought out my BRN-4 M38-style DMR, loaded with Winchester 69-grain Sierra MatchKing ammo. The rifle’s zeroed at 100 yards, but today we’re pushing out to 500 yards.

To do that effectively, I needed one crucial number: muzzle velocity.

Getting Muzzle Velocity and Syncing to Ballistic Calculator

I fired three shots over the chronograph and recorded the following readings:

  • 2798 fps
  • 2791 fps

  • 2790 fps

The Garmin app averages those for me—2793 fps—and displays the min and max as well. Then I synced that data directly to the Applied Ballistics profile on my watch. That gave me precise elevation and windage holds, right there on my wrist.

With the chrono readings synced, I no longer needed my phone. Everything was stored in the watch, making it super streamlined for shooting.

Dialing in and Making the Shot

Once the ballistic data was in place, I:

  • Set my target distance to 500 yards in the watch
  • Verified that my elevation hold was 4.10 mils

  • Dialed that into the optic, which has mil adjustments

  • Removed the chrono and got into position

Then I took the shot—and got an instant hit on steel.

The Advantage of Garmin’s Shooting Ecosystem

This whole process—chrono to wrist to scope—eliminated any guesswork. I didn’t need a spotter, and I didn’t have to do trial-and-error ranging. Everything I needed was in my Garmin shooting ecosystem, and it worked flawlessly.

Not only does this setup improve precision, but it saves time, keeps you focused, and simplifies long-range shooting. And yes, it also tracks your steps if you’re curious.

Final Thoughts

I walked away from this range session seriously impressed with Garmin’s shooting tech. The smartwatch, compact chronograph, and Applied Ballistics app worked together seamlessly to turn my rifle into a 500-yard laser pointer.

If you're looking to take your precision game to the next level—or just want reliable tools for consistent data collection—this Garmin lineup is worth checking out.
