BASIC AR-15 OR LARGE FRAME .308?

At first glance, this rifle looks like a standard AR-15. It has familiar furniture, standard controls, and the profile most shooters recognize immediately. But this is not a 5.56 rifle. This is the Smith and Wesson M&P10 chambered in .308 Winchester, built on a large frame AR platform.

That distinction matters.

Large frame AR rifles do not follow a true mil spec standard like the AR-15. Receiver heights, handguard compatibility, and parts selection require closer attention. This rifle gives us a solid opportunity to walk through those differences and establish a performance baseline before upgrades.

SMITH AND WESSON M&P10 OVERVIEW

The M&P10 is one of the most affordable large frame AR rifles currently available. It features a fully ambidextrous lower receiver, which is uncommon at this price point. Magazine release, bolt catch, and controls are accessible from both sides.

Out of the box, the rifle ships with standard AR-style furniture, a 20 round magazine, and no iron sights. The gas block includes a rail section, allowing the addition of a matching height front sight if desired.

This model uses a low top receiver height pattern. That is critical when selecting a free float handguard. Some manufacturers, such as Aero Precision, use a high pattern. Smith and Wesson uses the low pattern. Choosing the correct rail ensures proper alignment with the upper receiver.

There is no universal standard in the large frame AR world. Always verify compatibility before ordering components.

OPTIC SELECTION: ATHLON TALOS BTR GEN 2 4-14X44

To stay within the budget theme, we selected the Athlon Talos BTR Gen 2 4-14x44 optic. This scope features an APRS style mil reticle, 0.1 mil click adjustments, zero stop elevation turret, side parallax adjustment, and illuminated reticle settings.

The turrets provide clear tactile feedback with no noticeable slop. For shooters who prefer mil over MOA adjustments, this optic offers a clean and usable reticle that supports holdovers without constant dialing.

The scope is mounted in a Midwest Industries HD quick detach mount. The mount provides solid lockup, repeatable tension adjustment without tools, and a robust interface suitable for a .308 rifle.

RANGE TEST: 100 TO 500 YARDS

For ammunition, we used 150 grain Hornady hunting loads. While not match ammunition, this provides a realistic look at how the rifle performs with common, readily available .308 ammo.

We began at 100 yards with a dead hold, then progressively worked out to 200, 300, 400, and 500 yards using reticle holds only. No dialing was performed. Wind calls were managed through the reticle as well.

Despite lacking a free float handguard and running a factory mil spec trigger, the rifle produced consistent impacts out to 500 yards. First round hits were achieved at 400 yards, and with minor corrections, impacts at 500 yards followed.

For a rifle with minimal break in and basic components, that level of performance is respectable.

TRIGGER AND UPGRADE POTENTIAL

The factory trigger is a standard mil spec unit. It is serviceable but gritty, with noticeable input during the break. That movement is visible through the optic, especially when stretching distance.

This reinforces the purpose of this baseline test.

The M&P10 serves as an affordable foundation for a large frame AR build. With upgrades such as a free float handguard, improved trigger, and potentially match grade ammunition, there is clear room for performance gains.

In the next phase, we will fully upgrade this rifle and return to the range to evaluate the improvements.

If you are considering a budget AR-10 platform, the Smith and Wesson M&P10 proves that even in stock configuration, it is capable of practical performance at distance.
