Caleb's Personal Gear for Gunfighter Gauntlet 2024

Hi everyone, Caleb with Brownells here! Today, I’m excited to share another video for the Gunfighter Gauntlet. If you’re not familiar with the Gunfighter Gauntlet, it’s a shooting competition we’re hosting at our range.

Introduction to Armored Core Division

In this post, I’m going to go through the gear I’m personally using for the Armored Core division of the competition. This division requires participants to go full kit, minus a helmet. Essentially, all you need is a plate carrier and a way to hold magazines, alongside your rifle and handgun. Let’s dive into the specifics.

The Rifle

First up, let’s talk about the rifle. I’m probably going to use this rifle, although it's not quite 100% complete yet. There are a few tweaks I still need to make, so I might cover the rifle build in detail later on. For now, I’ll just highlight the essentials:

  • Running an EOTech with a magnifier for versatility at different ranges.
  • Using a traditional rifle caliber, such as 5.56, which is perfect for this competition.

Soft Goods

Pants

I’ve had these pants for a few years now, and they’re my go-to range pants. These are the Fjallraven Vidda Pro Ventilated pants. Some key features:

  • Reinforced knees (though I’ve already blown out one knee from heavy use).
  • Made from G-1000 material, which can be waxed for waterproofing.
  • Adjustable tension on the bottom cuff and a built-in hook to secure the pants to your boot laces.
  • Zippers on the side for ventilation, which came in handy during a hot hike in Gatlinburg.

Shirt

I prefer the Velocity Systems rugby shirt for hot days. It’s lightweight and breathable, but not suitable for cold weather. It also has Velcro and pockets on the upper arms. Interestingly, this shirt was added to the game "Escape from Tarkov," which makes me feel like the developers are keeping an eye on me!

Sunglasses

I switched from Oakley Holbrooks to Magpul Pivot sunglasses. They offer good eye protection, are polarized, and look cool.

Boots

The best boots I’ve ever worn are the Viktos Johnny Combat boots. They’re lightweight, breathable, and extremely comfortable. I wear them for everything from range days to amusement park trips. They hold up well, with only minor cosmetic issues after years of use.

Belt Setup

Belt

I’m using the Ferro Concepts Bison Belt, reinforced with Tegris material and nylon. It features a Cobra buckle and an Inner Belt with a Radian buckle.

Accessories

  • Gloves: Patrol Incident Gear (PIG) gloves, which are durable and comfortable.
  • Holster: Safariland ALS holster with a thumb button for secure retention, mounted on a True North Concepts plate with a leg strap.
  • Magazine Pouches: Esstac KYWI pouches, which I bought in different colors to match my gear setup.

Miscellaneous

  • Dump Pouch: Edgar Sherman dump pouch for quick access to store magazines or other items.
  • Medical Pouch: Spiritus Systems GP pouch containing a tourniquet, first aid kit, gauze, and a Sharpie.
  • Additional Magazine Pouch: Esstac KYWI 40-degree offset pouch with a magnet for added retention.

Plate Carrier

I’m using the Spiritus Systems LV119 plate carrier in MultiCam Black. It’s sleek and minimalist, with expander wings for modular adjustments. The expander wings feature tubes for quick donning and doffing without dealing with Velcro, perfect for adjusting the fit when wearing a jacket.

Front Placard

The front placard holds my magazines using elastic inserts from Spiritus Systems. It also includes a phone holder from Juggernaut, which I purchased separately.

Final Thoughts on Gear

The gear I’m using is on the higher end of the price range, but you don’t need to spend a fortune to participate in the competition. However, avoid super cheap gear as it tends to be uncomfortable and fall apart quickly. Investing a bit more in quality gear is worthwhile.

Hearing Protection

I use Walker’s Silencer R 600s for ear protection. They work well in most conditions, though wind can sometimes affect their performance. The charging case is a convenient feature, allowing me to recharge the ear pro on the go.

Conclusion

That’s a rundown of the gear I’m using for the Gunfighter Gauntlet. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post them below. Stay tuned for the next video where I’ll be putting on all this gear and running a mock course similar to what you can expect in the competition.

Thanks for joining us, and we’ll see you next time!
