Now that the stain job has dried properly, it’s time for the
fun part -
applying the finish. This is the most rewarding part of the job to
me, and is
when you see the results of all your hard work.
Last month I wrote about stripping the old finish off of a stock and
getting it ready for refinishing. Well, we have this perfectly sanded
stock and now the question is, what are we going to do with it™
It was a really tough hunting season, and your poor gun took
quite a beating!
Look at those dings and scratches in the stock.
Stock refinishing is a very common job for many shops, but
we’ve seen that some gunsmiths leave the checkering “as is”
rather than re-cutting it.
Many of our customers call us and say
“I can’t get my gunstock finishes to come out looking right. What am I doing
wrong”™ Probably nothing.
Rottenstone is an extremely fine, natural, abrasive powder that has been
used by gunsmiths for generations to smooth minor imperfections in fully
The stock Rubbing Kit uses traditional Rottenstone, good old double
boiled Linseed Oil, a Felt Pad and your elbow grease to remove minor imperfections
from fully cured gunstock finishes and produce the final, soft
luster of a London Oil Finish.
It is usually best to remove the barreled action from the stock. If a thick or
high gloss finish is present on the wood, it will have to be removed before the
dent can be steamed out.
