Brownells Supports Haley Dunn’s Olympic Skeet Team Dream

Brownells, the world’s leading distributor of factory gun parts, gunsmithing tools, equipment and firearms accessories, is lending its support to Haley Dunn, one of the country’s top women shotgunners, in her quest to represent the United States as a member of the 2008 U.S. Women’s Olympic Skeet Team.

Dunn regularly travels internationally as a member of the USA Shooting shotgun team, and has been named to the first alternate position on the 2004 Olympic Skeet Team. Her long-term goal is to earn a position on the Team that will compete in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

“We are both pleased and proud to support Haley in her quest to qualify for the Olympic Skeet Team,” said Frank Brownell, president of Brownells. “She is setting an outstanding example for any young person interested in the shooting sports. Haley displays the courage, determination and focus that it takes to be a champion, and we are committed to helping her achieve her Olympic aspirations.”

To aid Dunn in reaching her goal, Brownell said that his company has made a substantial contribution to a trust fund set up in her name by U.S.A. Shooting in Colorado Springs. The fund is administered to help defray the expenses of training, travel, shooting materials and other expenses directly related to participation in Olympic qualifying activities.

A native Iowan, Dunn grew up in Eddyville, not far from Brownells headquarters in Montezuma. Her father, Larry Dunn, taught her to shoot when she was eight years old and, later, when he opened his own shooting range, introduced her to clay targets. “She was a natural,” he said, “and she hasn’t stopped shooting-and winning-since.”

Haley Dunn began drawing competitive shooting attention when, in 1999, she won the Iowa Ladies State Sporting Clays Championship at the age of 14. This has been followed by a string of successes as an individual and team shooter on skeet ranges around the world. These include:

  • Junior World Champion, Suhl, Germany - 2001
  • Junior Women’s Skeet World Champion, Cairo, Egypt - 2001
  • Junior Women’s National Skeet Champion - 2002, 2003
  • Junior Olympic Champion - 2002, 2003
  • Junior Women’s Skeet World Championship Team, Lahti, Finland - 2002
  • Silver Medal - Junior Women’s Skeet World Championships, Nicosia, Cyprus - 2003

Now 19, Dunn attends Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa. She also works to help promote shooting and hunting with women and youth, and still finds time to go deer hunting. Of her support by Brownells, she says, “This has been very important to my training program and in helping prepare me to earn a place on the Olympic team.”
