  Frank Talk About Guns

  Dear Folks Dear Folks
We've finally made it to the end of a really eventful year, and we decided to take a look at the product trends and comments from you'al over the past 12 months. One thing that jumps right out is that this has been a pretty amazing year not only for us, but for a whole lot of the firearms industry. Definitely a strange year because there are some really hot spots and some really slow spots. Generally, in some specific product markets things are booming and so far there doesn't seem to be a letup in sight. Hopefully, pretty good news for everyone. With Christmas and Hanukah coming up, the gang here thought it would be fun to put together a Wish List of 50 Must-Have Products for 2009.

With the strong sales of AR-15's over the last couple months of '08, 2009 will be the year to accessorize and shoot those AR-15's. If you own a shop or you're a gunsmith, get ready to offer your services to upgrade and optimizing your customer's AR-15's . . . everything AR is really hot! The AR-15 platform, accessories and ammo for these weapons will continue to drive overall sales in 2009. Help those customers fit out this amazing, versatile platform to be exactly the firearms their heart desires. There are definitely enough goodies out on the market and in our catalogs and on the web site for you easily do that. Also really keep in tune with the self-defense market - it continues to be strong and continues to grow. Especially get prepared to cater to the largest growing self-defense customer - the lady shooter - with products and weapons to make shooting more comfortable for her.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, and a Most Especially Happy New Year from all of us here at Brownells. May 2009 be your Best Year Yet!!

PS: Actually we put some extra items on the list . . . kinda a year-end bonus if you will.

Brownells Gunsmith Kink Brownells Gunsmith Kink
I ream barrels for screw in choke tubes using a lathe. I'm sure many other gunsmiths do as well. The reamer is held in the chuck and the chamber end of the barrel is aligned using a live center. If the barrel has an extension that prevents the live center from reaching the chamber, an adapter that goes into the chamber is used. I place the muzzle onto the reamer and the live center into the chamber end. While holding the barrel by hand, I use the tailstock to push the barrel into the reamer. If anything gets to tight, I just let go of the barrel. (Be sure to keep fingers out of any holes.) I only tap by hand. The kink is what to do when the barrel is to long to fit between the chuck held reamer and the tailstock. My lathe is 40" center-to-center.

The answer is to hold the reamer in a collet. I measured the choke reamers and the shafts are about .650". I then ordered a 21/32" (.656") collet for my lathe. Since the force applied to the reamer is so great, there was sometimes slippage of the reamer in the collet.
