  Frank Talk About Guns

  Dear Folks Dear Folks
I read somewhere that "A business without a set of values to live by is nothing more than a passing fancy". Got me to thinking, because growing your business is a difficult task, especially when it is coming at you so fast there is barely time to raise your head and plan. It's really going to help you in times like this to have some really strong convictions or values guiding you in HOW you run your business.

I often tell people that we try to run our company so that we treat every customer like we'd want to be treated if we were the customer. Guess that's called "The Golden Rule" in many circles, but it's a bit of business philosophy that goes back to some of the earliest recorded writings. The King James Version of the Bible says it as: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". However it's said, this way of treating your customers is one of the cornerstones of Brownells and many other customer-conscious companies. It is such a part of the "core" to many of the great companies, we really all need to look to it as a guiding principal for our businesses - OR we should look for it in the businesses with which we deal.

For the last 70 years, Brownells has built its business on this simple, very old-fashioned Rule. As mixed-up as everything is right now with our economy, some would say this is the best of times and the worst of times for our industry . . . unprecedented demand and woefully late deliveries. Yet, it is during these times where this one great Rule should guide you. It will guide you in how you retain your existing customers, how you attract new ones, how you grow your own business.

For years Brownells has had a "Notify" policy. If something is out of stock you can be put it on the list of notifies so we will let you know when it does arrive from the factory, and we are holding it for you if you still want to order it. This is an unheard level of service for customers . . . it is a "no obligations" hold on a product. It ties up inventory. But, it's how we'd like to be treated. It meets the guide-lines of the Rule.

There is also the "Pay Shipping Costs Only Once" policy we have. When an item on your order is out of stock, but the rest of your order is ready to go, we ship the in-stock items and the back-ordered items are shipped for free. We charge you only once for the shipping. This policy too, meets the test of the Rule. By the way, we think companies who use their shipping/handling fees as a profit center have a fundamental problem with their core values.

"Alternative Choice" is another example of one of the Rule policies. If an item is not in stock - what else is there? We'll try to help you find an item to meet your needs. Our "Technical Help Line" is definitely a Rule policy . . . giving you free access to professional, bench-trained gunsmiths to help you with a problem or making sure you're buying the right thing - an original, totally unique service in our industry to our customers. "Free On-Line Videos" and "How-To Articles" - yup, a couple of other Rule policies. And, the granddaddy of all Rule policies - our "No-Hassle, Satisfaction Guaranteed Forever Return Policy". Check a company's return policy; are they partners in your success or just interested in the money without backing your purchase with support from them. If the return policy is long enough and simple enough to be beneficial to you - then you have found a business partner. Anything other than that . . . all you have is a transaction.

In today's firearm's market conditions, you want to provide your customers with the services they want from you, using the Rule as your guiding principal. When you chose your suppliers, you want to go with someone who is partnering in your success, who is running their business using the Rule as their guide too. Of course it's always your choice - but the reason we're telling you all of this and recommending this as your guide is really simple. All of us here want you to succeed in your business. To make it grow, to keep bringing those old customers back and to find new ones. We are committed to the Rule, we know it works. We really sincerely want it to work for you too. The reason this Rule of Business has stood the test of so many centuries is because it is truly the right Rule to guide your business. Let it be your guide.

Fabricated Extractor for Stevens Tip-up Model 4 Fabricated Extractor for Stevens Tip-up Model 4
The Stevens Tip-ups were first introduced in the 1870's and discontinued in 1895. Parts are virtually non-existent for these.

I recently was asked if I could fabricate an extractor to make one fine old arm complete and functional, for pass down to family members.

The extractor in these models is actually more of a "lifter" that lifts the cartridge from the chamber allowing one to pick the cartridge and or fired case with the fingers.

  Get Ready
The IRS decides to audit Grandpa, and summons him to the IRS office. The IRS auditor was not surprised when Grandpa shows up with his attorney.

The auditor said, "Well, sir, you have an extravagant lifestyle and no full-time employment, which you explain by saying that you win money gambling. I'm not sure the IRS finds that believable."
