Daily Defense 1-37: EDC & Your Car

Author Jeff Gonzales

We spend a lot of time in our cars, so a personal defense emergency may happen when you're walking to or from your vehicle - or even when you're in it. When going from a building to your car, pay attention to who's in the area and what they're doing. Are people bustling about, or are they loitering? If the latter, keep an eye on them, especially if they're near your vehicle. When you get in or out of the car, lock all the doors immediately. A car is a confined space, and in the event of an attack, you may not have easy access to your gun, so your "first-strike" defensive weapon may be something else, like a large flashlight. Its purpose is to buy you time to access your gun, exit the vehicle, OR even just drive away. Ideally, you want to park your car as close to the building as possible, in a well-lit area (at night), and in one with a lot of pedestrian traffic. Criminals are less bold when other people are around. If you need to leave your firearm in the vehicle, make sure you have a dedicated lock box for it. Hiding it or locking it glove compartment is NOT enough to secure it properly!
