How do I become a gunsmith and obtain an FFL?
There are many ways of becoming a gunsmith. Some folks get their training by going to one of the gunsmithing trade schools that are located throughout the U.S. Others choose to take correspondence study and learn at their own pace. Still others work with an established gunsmith before going out on their own.

Obtaining an FFL is a fairly simple process. By virtue of the Gun Control Act Of 1968, anyone who works on firearms that belong to another individual is required to have an FFL. You can get one by contacting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms field office in your state and asking for an application blank. You will need to fill this out and return it along with the required fee. A background check will be done on you and if you pass, a license will be issued which will be good for three years. The BATF will be happy to provide a very detailed list of information on the rules and regulations involved with having an FFL.
