Carding on Your Lathe With a Wheel & a Drill When Applying Dicropan IM
-- Ernie Shane, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin
I begin by cleaning with Dicro-Clean 909 and then immersion in the boiling water tank, followed by applying the IM. I return the workpiece to the boiling water tank and five minutes later I card with steel wool in the normal manner. After that, I apply IM, boil for five minutes and then, using previously installed muzzle and breech plugs which have turning centers, I place the workpiece in my lathe. I mount one of your fine carding wheels on an arbor in my 3/8” hand drill put the lathe in reverse and card the H out of it! In one minute I can do what normally takes five minutes for a super uniform finish. I swab on the next coat of IM while still running the lathe, then I pull it off and put it in the boiling tank. Repeat until you have the finish you want.
