Brownells Gunsmith Tech Corner - January 2010

Question: I recently purchased a Remington Woodsmaster semi-auto 270. I am having difficulty finding the mounts that I would need for a scope. I would appreciate any help you might be able to give.

Answer: If you have the old Model 742 Woodsmaster it will use a Weaver #62 base item #955-010-062 and if you have the new 750 Woodsmaster it will use Weaver base #93 item #955-010-093. The difference is the thread dimension between the two models. The older rifle uses a 6x48 thread and the newer models use an 8x40 thread for mounting the base.

Question: I purchased the Brownells Surface Hardening Compound a few years back, and I have not a clue where the instruction sheet went that was with it when I first received the stuff. It's been too long I don't remember the directions.

Answer: With that product the procedure is to heat the part red hot, dip it into the powder, and heat again. Two or three applications is usually all you need. After you heat it the last time the part should be quenched in water to harden the surface.

Question: I'm interested in building a 1911 that I can convert from 9mm to .40 S&W. From the looks of it the best way to go is to have an entire upper (slide, barrel, etc) in each caliber. Is this what I need to do or can I swap barrels within the same slide for the 2 calibers? Also, I had given some thought to a Hi-Power in 9mm and .40 S&W that I could convert back and forth simply by changing the upper. I have a Hi-Power in 9mm, but I do not know where to get the parts to do this or if it's even a good idea. I'm thinking that the 1911 convertible would be a better bet. If its any help, my reason for doing this is not because I have a real love affair with either caliber, I'm a .45 kind of guy, but because ammo in both of these calibers is so easy to find and I've always had this thing for buying ammo or brass and then building a gun to go around it!

Answer: If the case head diameter is the same for the calibers on a conversion, you can use the same slide. Being that the head diameters for the 9mm and the .40S&W cartridges are not the same you will have to use the appropriate slide for the caliber. The complete top end would be the way to go in your instance. Browning did, and still may, offer the Hi Power in .40 S&W. Browning parts may be expensive but available.
