Brownells Gunsmith Kinks® - June 2008

-- Paul Koester via email

If your barrel is extremely fouled, try this technique to loosen both lead and copper deposits. This is generally not required if you clean the rifle each time you shoot.
  1. Place a barrel plug (available from Brownell’s) in the breech end of the barrel. Be sure the barrel plug (also called a chamber plug) is secure in the breech end of the barrel before filling with the mixture.
  2. Stand the barrel with the muzzle-up and fill to capacity with a 50/50 mixture of bore solvent and Kroil. Let this sit for 24 hours.
  3. Pour out the dirty solution into a suitable (disposable) container. You will be amazed at the amount of lead that will have been leached out of the barrel.
  4. Run a cleaning rod with the proper size brush (avoid brass as this will dissolve somewhat) down the barrel starting at the breech end.
  5. Run a cleaning rod with a jag and circular patch down the barrel starting at the breech end. Be sure to remove all traces of the bore solvent/Kroil mixture.
  6. Finish with a patch that has a few drops of barrel lubricant on it.
