Cowboy Campfire - August 2006

Pull up a log and gather round the Campfire here friend. For you new Pilgrims, welcome to the Brownells Campfire, where each month we jaw about new products to keep your shooting irons on target. Sometimes we go over some simple ways to make your guns perform a mite better, and sometimes ol’ Badlands here will give you an update on a ‘hot item’ Sal and I have seen at some of the shoots we attend around the country. Enough of the small talk or you will take me for an East Coast politician. Let’s look at what we have this month.

Ya know the old saying ‘What’s old is new again’, well Ballistol fits that saying perfectly. This product has been around for decades but a whole new generation is discovering its value and many uses. We offer this in 1.5 oz. aerosol (#982-000-001), 6 oz. aerosol (#982-000-002) and the very popular 16 oz. liquid (#982-000-003). When at a match, check out the long-range rifle events and see what the folks shooting the Holy Black are using (that’s black powder, not the heathen smokeless imitation). Lots of them will be using Ballistol since they know this product performs and the shooters of smokeless loads are equally impressed. Ballistol was developed for the military in Europe decades ago and had a loyal following ever since. The formula is simple yet stood the test of time: Medical grade mineral oil, alkaline salts of oleic acid, various alcohols, Benzyl Acetate and oils from various vegetable seeds. There are no cancer-causing materials and it is bio-degradable. It removes copper, lead, and powder residue while it lubricates and protects. Cowboy action shooters have discovered a number of other uses for Ballistol (even bug bites) but Badlands is not promoting this for anything other than gun care. But if you check out various cowboy action web sites they are loaded with other ideas for this near-century old liquid.

Without question, the Ruger New Vaquero swept the cowboy ranks and lots of folks are packing this iron, including Badlands (a pair of .45’s in 5.5” barrels, blued). Nothing sets these guns off better or easier than a new set of grips. Brownells offers a wide variety of grips, including ones for the smaller New Vaquero frame. In a previous Campfire we discussed the fine products from Bar S Grips (Tru-Ivory) and this month I would like to tell you about the fine product offered by the folks from Ajax. Ajax produces a white pearlite grip (#041-000-018) as well as a black model (#041-000-019) for the New Vaquero (these also fit the Blackhawk that use the XR-3 grip frame). Though the white grips have been most in demand from our customers, both colors give a soft iridescent sparkle and glow that is very appealing. As many of you pardners know, Ruger grip frames tend to vary from revolver to revolver, but these Ajax grips have taken into account the range of tolerance found in the Ruger frames. These grips will slap right on and give you a factory fit – ready for your posse and the firing line. For folks looking for aftermarket grips at a lower price point – without sacrificing quality – Ajax certainly fills the need.

Mention the names Evil Roy, Wicked Felina, and Holy Terror in the world of SASS and most folks know the dynasty this family represents. Over the past few years I‘ve come to know Roy (Gene Pearcey) and his wife and granddaughter as friends, I am proud to say. With all the records this family holds, it was easy to be intimidated the first time I saw that red hat band and red suspenders approaching our booth, but Sal and I quickly learned Evil Roy is a caring and sharing person. His shooting classes are well known and I have spoken with dozens of his former students – each felt they got their moneys worth and more. Well dern it , not every cowpoke can saddle the horse and go riding off to school, but Evil Roy has taken care of this challenge too by offering three of his outstanding DVD’s. Rifle (#100-002-216), Pistol (#100-002-217), and Shotgun (#100-002-218) covers all the bases and whether a beginner or seasoned shooter, there are tips and techniques all will benefit from. Gene’s DVD’s have been selling like hot cakes on a cold morning from our Cowboy Catalog and Sal and I think these are certifiable winners.

Cowpokes, the Campfire is burning low and some of you need to be hitting the trail. I’ll be on the lookout for you again next month and until then, keep your aim straight and your belly full.
