Cowboy Campfire - April 2005
Plenty of wood on the fire, pot of beans a steamin’ and kettle of coffee – about ready for folks to come ridin’ in. Say, here they are now.
Welcome pardners – sit a spell and jawbone with ol Badlands here! How’s the shootin’ been going for you? Feels good to be putting lead down-range again after the long winter. I got those new Vaqueros slicked-up and ready to dance so really looking forward to the 2005 cowboy season. Being early spring it’s a bit wet out there yet for some of us, but soon enough it will be hot and dusty. You all can be ready for those dusty days with Brownells new Super-Duty Pipe Cleaners (#116-000-001). These handy 6” cleaners come packaged 720 pieces to a box, and work into all those nooks and crannies where dirt and dust like to hide. Just another pipe cleaner, you may be thinking – wrong! These bad boys have plastic bristles worked into the traditional pipe cleaner material, and really do the job. Try a box of these cleaners and see what a difference they make.
And just when you thought the cleaning job could not be made easier, along comes Brownells Lewis Lead Remover for Rifles and Shotguns (#516-101-030). The Lewis kit for revolvers has been a constant hit with Cowboy Action Shooters, and Sugar Creek Sal and me see them wherever we shoot. Now they have them for rifles and shotguns, ta-boot! Here is a quick rundown on calibers and gauges: .32/.30, .38, .44/.45, .50 cal., 20 gauges, and 12 gauge. The tips in the kit attach to any cleaning rod with 8-32 threads, and don’t forget the JB Bore Cleaner for really tough lead cleanup. The brass patches remove lead and/or plastic fouling like no other system, and the price is pleasing!
Another new addition to our cowboy line is Marble’s Henry Tang Sight for the Henry Big Boy .44 (#579-000-084). This sight is all-steel construction, has micrometer adjustments for windage and elevation, and folds to the rear for easy storage. This sight locates the aperture close to the eye for a clear sight picture and the extra sight radius increases accuracy for many shooters. While on the subject of Marbles, lots of you pards approach me and Sal at the shoots asking about the full line of Tang Sights they offer. In your new Cowboy Catalog (#077-100-003), have a gander at page #21, middle column of the page, and you will a wide selection of them for Marlin, Winchester, Browning, and many, many more.
The Smith Enterprise Flip-Up Rear Sight (#851-018-101) is another long-standing favorite for many of you Cowboy Action Shooters. It is available as a standard buckhorn sight for use on Cowboy lever guns, and, their LR Buckhorn Sight (#851-000-026) long range version that offers an additional 1-inch of elevation for shooting 45-70 and the other monster-sized, straight-walled black powder calibers at ranges of 500 to 800 yards. These units are patterned after the original ladder sights used by the buffalo hunters, and have extra wide wings (some of you pards refer to them as ‘horns’) for peep-like accuracy at close range when the ladder is in the down position. Flip-up the spring-loaded base and it’s an elevator for long range shooting. The sights are machined from barstock and designed to take the recoil of heavy recoiling rifles. These come in the blue matte finish, and fit a nominal 3/8” dovetail. They will look great on your rifle and are a pleasure for the eye.
Fires a dying down folks, so time to call it a day here at the Cowboy Campfire. Glad you stopped by and hope to see you back here again often. Until next time, keep your aim straight and your belly full!
