Brownells Gunsmith Tech Corner - August 2009
Each month we bring you some of the wide variety of Questions and Answers our professional Gun Tech’s receive. And, if you have a specific question you want answered, be sure to email us at WebBench@Brownells.com. This month’s questions:
Question: I have a Bushmaster AR-15 style rifle. The trigger on it has a heavy and rough pull and I feel it affects the accuracy when shooting it. Do you recommend an after market trigger (If so which one), or have a gunsmith try to lighten and smooth it out?
Ken D
Answer: While it is possible to improve on the stock trigger, I find it often more cost effective to install an aftermarket unit. If a 3-3.5 pound pull is what you want I recommend the JP Trigger and Low Mass Hammer. This easy-to-fit kit is fully adjustable to 3 pounds. With the Low Mass Hammer a full 36% lighter, you’ll experience faster ignition and crisper trigger pulls. If you need to get down lighter consider the JARD AR-15 Custom Trigger Kit which will get you down to a 2 pound pull.
Question: I recently joined USPSA and went to my first tournament last weekend. I am shooting a Sig P-226 with a Fobus Roto Belt Holster. I would like to know what front sight you sell that is highly visible for this type of shooting. The pistol currently has Nite Sights on it know. Thank you very much.
Don S.
Answer: You might want to look at the XS sight system Semi-Auto Express Sight Set. The low profile, high visibility sight provides a rapid sight picture which will get you on target quickly. You might also consider the Semi-Auto 24/7 Big Dot Tritium Express Sight Set. This matched set features green tritium on both front and rear sights for fast pickup under any light conditions. Both should work well for you. Good luck in your next tournament!
Question: I have an early BRNO model 2 in .22 cal with a 3/8 16mm) grooved dovetail and I need scope rings for it. Can you recommend some for me to use. I really appreciate your help.
Jose G.
Answer: The dovetail on your gun is probably closer to 11mm. (3/8" is between 9 and 10mm.) We have Warne rings that should do the job. Check out the 7.3 Rings on the web site. If possible, have it measured by a gunsmith. Then you can be sure to order the right one.
