In order to obtain maximum accuracy in any rifle, the bolt locking lugs
must sear evenly and completely in the receiver. In addition, by having all
lugs bear evenly, the stresses placed on the bolt during firing are distributed
uniformly no one lug is subjected to undue pressure.
Alterations of rifle bolts should be done with great care, especially if
intense heat is used for welding, soldering, or brazing. The heat treatment
of the locking lugs as well as other critical areas of the bolt such as the
cocking cam must not be altered.
Removing or installing a rifle barrel is a common gunsmithing task,

encounter problems directly related to his action wrench.
Earlier Remington centerfire bolt action, pump action and autoloading rifles
use an extractor that is riveted into the bolt. When an extractor breaks
or fails, it must be replaced.
